This sounds horrible. I feel bad for JRB. I really wanted to hear his score.

Fun show! Glad to hear it's coming back.

Matt Cavenaugh was just talking about his UC experience:

Matt's bod will go down in history. I'm just sayin'...

"I'm learning to dig deep down inside and find the truth within myself and put that out. I think what we identify with in popular music more than anything else is when someone just shares a truth that we can relate to. That's what I'm searching for in my music." - Ron Bohmer

"I broke the boundaries. It wasn't cool to be in plays- especially if you were in sports & I was in both." - Ashton Kutcher

But this version sounds terrible. They turned it into a jukebox musical, but in reverse. I wish they had kept the JRB score. I would have went to see it then.

I was just getting ready to post on this.

I am curious to hear people's reactions. Who saw it the first time around? Was it as bad as all that?

Will this new version work?

I was one of the handful that actually really liked the show. Despite the crippling flaws in the book and the set.

The acting and singing were great, the choreography really impressive, and the songs nicely placed and a great selection.

I must say I can't recall which songs JRB wrote, though. Maybe someone else can enlighten?

JRB's songs were my favorite part of the show. I saw it in it's out of town tryout twice.
His songs were Mr. Hopalong Heartbreak, That's How Texas Was Born, It Don't Get Better Than This... and I believe there was one for the antagonist character, it may have been called "That's How She Rides".
My favorite was "I Take It Back", the First Act finale in Florida, which was apparently cut before the show got to the Broadhurst. None of my friends could believe it- this was our favorite part of the show.

I am amongst the the VERY few he he who loved the show. I thought it had heart. It might not have been the greatest thing ever.. we all know that but, there was something special about it and I think a lot of it had to do with the performers in the show. Melinda Roys dancing was wonderful. She deserved her Tony Nom. JRB's songs were fun and fresh. Jenn Colella was fabulous. She gave everything she could to that part. My friends and I still yell "buddddddd parking pass" ohhh sally mayes. I cried everytime Uncle Bob died :o( It was just a fun, silly little show. And Marcus Chait! Where the hell is that guy!?! But I do admit.. this new tour just doesn't cut it.

Urban Cowboy seemed to suffer from (unfair) movie comparison syndrome (ie Footloose, Saturday Night Fever)
country music aint broadway music syndrome (ie Robber Bridegroom, Ring of Fire, Pump Boys and Dinettes)
Broadhurst flop syndrome (Kelly!!!! but also Lennon, 70 Girls 70, Rachael Lily Rosenbloom... okay, I'm mostly kidding on this one)

But anyway, Florida audiences were eating it up re: Urban Cowboy: Newly revised and tour I'm not sure I understand what's behind the decision to eliminate the original music...?

Yeah, I think taking the original score out is a big mistake. Those numbers where the only ones that had any dramatic point to them, and the Jeff Blumenkrantz material was by far the best in the show (IMHO).

And for the record, I also enjoyed the show more than most. I wouldn't go so far to say I loved it, but I did think it was a good time and thought it would of played well with the tourists.

Who else wrote the songs? How come JRB only wrote a few?

Oh, wasn't aware the movie had songs - ha. I'm not familiar with the movie. Was before my time I guess.

What was wrong with the set?

i don't remember anything being wrong with the set. It was mainly the factory and then gilleys bar with the mechanical bull. Sometimes the bull wouldn't work on time but that was all that was wrong with the set really. Everything is simple. I just love Colella and her red tank top :)
