"The Vineyard Theatre has announced dates for the upcoming world premiere of Kander & Ebb's The Scottsboro Boys, directed by Susan Stroman. The musical, previously announced for a developmental run, will instead enjoy a fully-staged production by the Off-Broadway not-for-profit.

Featuring music and lyrics by John Kander and Fred Ebb (Cabaret, Chicago, Kiss of the Spider Woman) and a book by David Thompson, the musical will begin previews Feb. 12, 2010 and open March 10 at the downtown venue. Musical direction is by David Loud.

The Scottsboro Boys, according to an announcement, "explores the famous 'Scottsboro' case of the 1930s in which a group of young African American teenagers were unjustly accused of attacking two women and the boys' attempts to prove their innocence." Billed as a "new musical," the work was one of the final collaborations from the famed songwriting team before Ebb's death"

Exciting! Although, it's more bad press from Alabama's history, ha.

I guess "Metal Children" is having a super short run?

This has the potential to make Stro's work on THOU SHALT NOT look like freakin' OKLAHOMA!

A minstrel show about murderers?!

As long as there are no dancing gurneys or frogs on bungee cords, and even if there is, I'll be there!

Maybe Idina Menzel and some of the 13 cast will be in it so people on Broadway World will pay attention.

I've been watching this since it was mentioned when he passed. I'm thrilled. And at the Vineyard, it's going to feel so immediate, confrontational in that space.

Sucks I'll miss this. Kander and Ebb are masters at doing a dark, moody musical.

The Vineyard is producing two musicals with "The _____ Boys" as a title this year.

They're doing this and co-producing "The Burnt Part Boys" with Playwrights Horizons.

I know that is totally insignificant, I just thought it was kind of strange.

Didn't Cy Coleman have 2 or 3 set to be done posthumously as well?
