Was Laura Benanti Ever Considered for MARY POPPINS?

I was listening to the Cast Recording the other day and, as much as I love Laura Michelle Kelly, I keep thinking of how I'd love to see Laura Benanti in the role of Mary Poppins.

Her voice is so well suited to the score and I think she'd nail the mixture of comedy and drama the role calls for.

I don't know if she was ever in the running when they were initially casting the Broadway production but I would love to see this performance.

Obviously, at this point in her career, I'm sure she's not looking to be a replacement in a production that's almost 5 years into its run.

Still, it's fun to dream.
