Does anyone know if they ever made a cast recording of the West End revival of Guys and Dolls with Jane Krakowski, Ewan McGregor, and Jenna Russell?

No. Really?? You needed to post this thread instead of just looking on Amazon or any other site.

Thought the '80s revival with Julie MacKenzie and Bob Hoskins as Miss Adelaide and Nathan Detroit is definitely worth having. It's much better than the Broadway revival with Faith Prince and Nathan Lane.

I myself have an embarrassing fondness for the movie soundtrack. Sure, Marlon Brando's no singer, but he's INFINITELY better than Pierce Brosnan, and goddamn but he's nice to look at. :3

I myself have an embarrassing fondness for the movie soundtrack...

I do as well, but the soundtrack was just an EP 45 with 4 songs. Aside from a few poor quality bootleg Lp's that as all we ever got.

I am surprised Rhino has not gone back and done a complete soundtrack CD of the film.

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

I was told (second-hand rather than first-hand information, and at the time it was on in the West End) that it wouldn't be recorded until the production transferred to Broadway. Now there doesn't seem to be much sign of that happenning.

I'm not sure if the 50 year copyright in recordings in the UK (95 in the US..thanks Mr Disney/Sonny) applies to movie soundtracks, or whether they're protected separately, so the recording on Amazon may be legit, or not!
They're now proposing to extend the 50 years to 95, which would end all the great jazz/blues/show reissues from companies with often pushed the original owners to do something decent with their archives.

There were many contract problems around the recording of the Donmar production that just went on and on - then the company started to leave the show on their given contacts and that was it! A sterling production - gone unrecorded!
Tho many, to this day see the National Theatre production far superior, me included!

A young actress with Noel coward after a dreadful opening night performance said to him 'Well, i knew my lines backwards this morning!'' Noels fast reply was ''Yes dear, and thats exactly how you said them tonight'!'

If that proposed EU amendment goes through to extend protection for 95 years, I don't think it can be made to apply retroactively. So the PD releases of SEVENTEEN, HAZEL FLAGG et. al are safe.

Frankly the labels are much more concerened about protecting the classic rock & pop material (The Stones, Beatles, Elvis) that remain very lucrative. I doubt too many of them are worried about PD releases cutting into the sales of HALF A SIXPENCE.

Naxos has recently done a PD release of MY FAIR LADY which I think is stupid because Sony's remaster is readily available everywhere and at a lower price than the Naxos edition!

I think if the new rules come in, they'll be able to stop future pressings of anything which has been released under the 50 year rule (see Japan?)
You're absolutely right about the rock'roll stuff..the companies can still make money, so they want to keep em for ever (they weren't too bothered about the blues/jazzers who were too small a market, and they weren't interested in them anyhow)
Would Sony have produced a decent cast recording release (as you say, they own the masters, not that this stopped The Beatles CDs being crap!) if they hadn't the competition from the public domain companies? If the companies looked after their recordings, kept them available in good quality reasonably priced recordings they'd be fine...but they invariably do as little as possible (particuarly the majors) and release (if at all) overpriced, shoddy product.

Anyone know who the two leads are in the Havana scene from the West End production?

Yes - that's right. And that clip on YouTube doesn't do it justice; it was astonishingly good in the theatre.

Those were the two leads in the clip? That didn't look like either of those two at all.

But the orchestrations on the MacKenzie/Hoskins cast recording are excruciating.

Did Jenna Russell really have the vocal range for Sarah? Or were her songs transposed?

The arrangements and orchestrations for the Donmar production were outstanding and sounded far better than on any recording. Such a shame they weren't officially preserved on CD re: West-End Cast Recording of GUYS & DOLLS?
