Posted: 5/23/08 at 7:53pmThe Broadway revival is scheduled to open in July but no theater has been announced and most of the roles still haven't been cast. Is the show REALLY going to open?

#6re: What's up with GODSPELL?
Posted: 5/23/08 at 8:02pmI thought the only thing we really DO know is that Gavin is playing Jesus.

Posted: 5/23/08 at 8:05pmMaybe Gavin should BECOME Jesus and work a miracle to get this show up and running.

I guess in your own little world, there isn't any capitalization or punctuation either.
Why don't you just stay in your own little world.

Dolly, I like your Gavin = Jesus = making sure it doesn't fall through scenario.
Make that happen, will ya?

"Dolly, I like your Gavin = Jesus = making sure it doesn't fall through scenario. "
I like this scenario as well. I, too, have been wondering what is going on with the show. I didn't realize the first preview was July 21.

they are planning to book the Booth or Barrymore.
Gavin Creel, Joshua Henry, Daniel Torres, and Sarah Chase are all cast. Others are cast as well but not much has been announced/revealed.
Previews are being pushed back - an official opening will be around late August.

Idiotic. TAKE CIRCLE IN THE SQUARE.
Thurgood is actually playing the Booth, not The Seafarer.

When I first read of this revival I was thinking that they would take Circle in the Square. I just started to get the sense that this show can be staged well in a space like the circle in the square.
However, I wouldn't be shocked to see Wicked and Godspell to cross promotion for the other show saying that you should check out Schwartz's new musical Wicked or you should see his older show Godspell.
It would be like when The Priate Queen was on Broadway. There were brochures for Les Miserables in the Hilton box office.

Posted: 5/24/08 at 8:05amOh, I dunno. When I did Godspell, it was in a proscenium theatre and I didn't see anything wrong with it. What specifically is wrong about Godspell being in a proscenium theatre?

I really am suprised this is coming back
We recently had a revival on tour here in the UK which was hoping for a west end transfer but the tour was playing to empty houses, the critics all said the show had not aged well (even with the updates) and the tour collapsed half way through its run.
I watched it here in the UK as it played the theatre i worked and half the audience walked out (and our theatre holds 2000 and it was only playing to about 400 to start with). It was a dreadful show which had aged really badly

Posted: 5/24/08 at 8:31amThe original production of GODSPELL played at the Promenade Theater (is it still standing?). It was a proscenium stage.

Godspell has always been one of my sentimental favorites (which is particularly weird coming from a Jewish girl!)
While I'll probably make a point to see it, I have my concerns about it's future for success, one of the beautiful things about Godspell had always been the interpretations and ways to use current culture to bring it to light.
I wonder if the simplicity of it is what will do it the most harm. (And I still think: ON B'way? Better run OFF)
IMHO

I've said this about eighty times but Godspell does not work in a proscenium theatre.
You've seen all the proscenium productions worldwide in the last 35 years and reached this conclusion? Or is it true because you said it eighty times?
