Mrs R & I saw Godot this afternoon.

The show was very entertaining & the performances were first rate. Lane & Irwin were perfect foils & their timing was perfect. John Goodman is beyond huge& he needs to lose a lot of weight for health reasons,. He played his role quite broadly. Glover as Lucky shined. He looks severly emaciated however. His head is shaved for the show (as was Goodman's) which only added to his emaciated look Does anyone know if he lost weight for the role or if he is sick? I had him sign a playbill before he left the stage. He was quite friendly. As he was leaving, I told him I saw him in frankenstein. He said , with a smile, "not many did".

After the performance, there was a Q & A with the audience. My thread title refers to Lanes conspicuous absence in the Q & A. There was an empty chair on stage for him. Does he normally shun these or was today & exception? Goodman perhaps had the best line when someone asked him 'Who was Godot". He said "The Guy we are waiting for" He was doing one liners throughout.

The production was signed for the deaf & the signers had to work furiously especially during Lucky's tirade. The TDF seats were the best we have ever had @ Studio 54. It did look like a sell out so we are lucky we got them.

We followed with dinner @ Iguana right up the block. Their $ 28.95 prix fix can not be beat.

They usually arent' required to do those things. Maybe he had things to do.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I just think he's a misanthrope. Can't say I blame him entirely.

I can see why you'd say that, Rudy. You strike me as a pretty angry guy (from your posts regarding Reasons to be Pretty awhile back, which were borderline misogynistic. Just my impression, and pardon me if I'm mistaken. However, your statement that Lane might be a misanthrope and you can't blame him for that lead me to believe that I'm not).

Mr Lane seems to be a really unhappy man, but he does try to do things for his audience - it would seem he doesn't care to stage-door (absolutely his right, an actor owes his audience nothing but a performance), but would often give the doorman up to 50 pre-signed playbills to pass out to his fans. A very talented but also troubled individual.

^ Ghostlight, I don't think you think you do, but you actually are agreeing with me on Lane.

As far as my previous comments on Reasons to Be Pretty, you might reread them. I simply asked is the show a cavalcade of PC comments, many of which stem from feminism that goes too far and do not, of course, address that men are pressured to be "pretty" as well. I had read reviews that made it sound like a show with the overarching message that men are superficial and need to reexamine that, to which I immediately think...and women aren't?

If you stuck around to read the thread then you know that I now intend to see the show.

Oh yes, and I don't think there's anything wrong with being misanthropic, especially for an actor - the public can be very waring. That is sweet of him to sign playbills for people though. Perhaps he is simply shy? I met someone who sat next to him at "Frost/Nixon" and the guy was simply stunned that Nathan was sitting next to him, and at intermission (or the end, can't remember, come to think of it I don't remember an intermission) he thanked the guy for not bothering him and letting him enjoy the show.

I do agree with you about Nathan and I absolutely did see that you'd intended to see RTBP, and commend you for it. I think if you re-read your posts there, you'll see a lot of anger. I don't pay a great deal of attention to this board, but you used some fairly strong language and clearly had very strong feelings about women and feminism, to the degree that it stuck with me, and that's how I came to remember you. Nothing personal. That's just the way you came across.

It's one thing to want to keep a distance fro your audience, but being a misanthrope is not something to strive for. Particularly in an actor. I don't think he's shy. I think he's a guy with a lot of issues. He's a very angry, sad and troubled man.

^ Maybe so (on Nathan, I mean). If so, he has achieved a dazzling career in spite of it.

I do not deny that I can be an angry person - the issues I have spoken of anger me very much. There is a lot to be angry about in this world, even some art. I am also very outspoken, not just in my anger but in all things I am passionate about. I enjoy it in others as well - very direct, nuanced conversation that doesn't settle for simplicities. That is a great part of what continues to draw me to this message board.

I am also, however, a particularly kind, jubilant person, so if you may keep an eye out for my posts then you can remember me for that, too. :)

"Maybe so (on Nathan, I mean). If so, he has achieved a dazzling career in spite of it".

Possibly because of it. He's extraordinarily talented, no doubt.

"I am also, however, a particularly kind, jubilant person, so if you may keep an eye out for my posts then you can remember me for that, too. :)"

Fair enough. I'll be on the lookout. Have a great night re: Where In The World Is Nathan Lane?
