Where do the props go?

After a show has closed where do the props and costumes go? Are they shipped to other theatres to be used? Or do they go in some auction for the public?
I remember this being posted not to long ago, but it didn't get any replys.

They don't go to heaven where the angels fly
They go to the lake of fire and fry
Won't see them again 'till the fourth of July

Actors are often able to buy certain items. For example, Daniel Marcus, who played the Priest and understudied Fosco in WIW got to buy his 500+ dollar Fosco boots for twenty bucks. This may have been in accordance to the rule that you cannot reuse shoes.

i know for the sets they burn them and the orchestration scores go somewhere. can't remember where though.
except, for Crazy For You, Papermill used the same sets about 9 years later. or was it just the same set design?

Posted: 5/28/06 at 9:49pmThe theatre that i go act with, they keep them in a prop room, just in case they need it for another show. They could do that i guess for Broadway shows but it would be a lot of stuff. Then again i act with a non-equity, theatre that has a show for a few days, weeks and sometimes months so the props are bieng used at different times for different shows, then again with Broadway shows thier producers pay for everything.

"... know for the sets they burn them..."
In years past that was a tradition with most Broadway scenery. But many sets for today's shows are typically built a little more sturdy and can survive many years in storage or on the road. Yet I do remember walking by the Belasco just after the revival of FOLLIES had closed. There were huge dumpsters full of all that pink scenery from the show.

Many times detailed costumes and props (Such as M. White for Into the Woods) are circled around for community productions as well.

"...Patti LuPone has a fondness for buying her costumes..."
On her live concert CD she talks about all the costumes she stole! She's been busy of late but as soon as things simmer down she usually puts a few things on eBay. Good stuff too! One thing that comes to mind were her "tap" shoes from ANYTHING GOES.

Posted: 5/29/06 at 12:56amI'm not sure about Broadway shows, but in "regular" theater, many props are rented and then returned at the end of the run. Also, many theaters have a prop storage space and will reuse props in later productions.

I can only speak for costumes. (If I remember correctly) When a Broadway show closes the costumes that were used often go into storage, are re-used or sold.
... does anyone know if they can be rented?
