"this post screams of a newbie"
Well i guess you have discussed these matters before but the facts (and times) they keep on changing you see. The musical that will be the longest running from this decade (00's) might not have premiered yet. The producers was probably a hot candidate for this award two years back but it seems to have lost its steam and will probably be surpassed by mamma mia, wicked and jersey boys as well as a couple more shows from this decade. Not that i see this as the best measure for commercial and public success but its fun to make predictions. By the way I am not a native english speaker so that might add a newbie flair to my texts (not that i am not a newbie).

Posted: 9/26/06 at 4:37pmI don't see Jersey Boys having the long term appeal like Wicked or Mamma Mia does. I think it will have a healthy 5 year or so run, then close (similar to The Producers).

I shall admit that i am a way out of town "pundit" living in Sweden so i really don't have much facts to base my predictions on. But i think that the Jersey Boys really have a strong card in their local connection. On the other hand the show will definetely suffer a blow when JLY quits. It will also get local competition (sort of)and genre competition when the Dylan musical opens.
It's not impossible that Phantom will be the last show to close of the current running ones. Mackintosh will probably be ready to suffer some years in order to wait out B&B, Rent, Chicago and TLK before closing. In the meantime the current running shows from this decade might have closed.

Wicked needs to move. It's occupying such an amazing theatre.
Anyways, yeah, Wicked will probably run for at least another 5-10 years. Rent will probably close soon, as with The Producers.

Posted: 9/26/06 at 6:57pmWicked will last WAY more than 10 years. I have been wanting to see it since before it opened, and I STILL haven't been able to get my hands on tickets. I give it at least 15 MORE years.

Posted: 9/26/06 at 7:31pmI agree that Wicked will make it beyond 10 years. It is definitely more appealing and prettier to look at than The Phantom of the Opera, the only other show to equal the caliber of hype preceding Wicked. That said, The Lion King and Mamma Mia seem to have enough appeal that Wicked will have to stay in good shape. As long as it doesn't recycle its casts (the way Cameron Macintosh and Lloyd Webber do for their shows) it should remain strong.

"On the other hand the show will definetely suffer a blow when JLY quits."
It will? No one beyond the theatre community knows (or cares) who JLY is. He's out frequently, and the show still plays to over 100% capacity without him.

Wicked will run for a long time, along with SpamAlot and The Phantom of The Opera.
"On the other hand the show will definetely suffer a blow when JLY quits. It will also get local competition (sort of)and genre competition when the Dylan musical opens."
You obviously don't know about Michael Longoria? Whenever JLY decides to call it quits and leaves, the show will be in good hands if the producers bump Michael up to Frankie Valli or if they find someone who can sing the score 8 times a week. I really don't think the Bob Dylan musical will be competition for Jersey Boys cause in all fairness, the only thing Jersey Boys has in common with the Dylan musical and Mamma Mia is the use of songs from popular groups/singers. Other than that, Jersey Boys stands by itself and separates itself from the others in the jukebox musical catergory.

Wicked, goes without saying.
Unfortunately.

Posted: 9/26/06 at 8:21pmi sadly concur with you but in all fairness though not the greatest show ever it is enjoyable. Does it deserve the run length it will have: no. but it does at least deserve some time and it will definitly will see it. I think Rent will last a while longer because it is Rent. And honestly I truly will find it a sad day that show closes because its a piece that just cant be revived for to change a piece that is so perfect would be a terrible thing and I see it as a show that once its gone it stays gone so I pray it has a longer run. Mamma Mia needs to close though.
