It's one day later and I am still overcome. This is a gorgeous, haunting production, at times funny and exhilarating, and often times thought-provoking and moving. We ended up talking about the show with another couple for hours afterwards. When was the last time a show on Broadway spurred so much conversation? I havn't had that complete feeling of being changed by a production since Sondheim's "Passion". Add to that the importance of this play in Theatre History (Wedekind was the father of modern expressionistic theatre), the timelessness and indeed urgency, of the subject matter (lack of communication between parents and children, maintaining one's individuality within a repressive society, losing one's innocence), the originality of the staging and the lush pop/rock score, and this musical becomes a must see. I'm still processing it and my words can't do it justice, but GO. This is something you need to experience for yourself. If this doesn't succeed, then we all deserve a future on Broadway of nothing but fluff and movie-musicals.
