2 Questions:
1. Is the secret any good?
2. Do they have SRO or does everyone have to pay full price or TKTS?
THANKS!

Posted: 11/20/05 at 3:56pmI saw the Sat. 11/19 afternoon show. Maria was not in it. Lisa was great. The show was really good. I liked it just as well as Phantom.

Depending on what you mean....
The secret itself is not a good thing.
But the secret was 'good' in the sense that it was worth waiting to find out.

WEll, if the story took place in the 20th/21st century, I would tend to agree with you. However, for the time period, it is a good secret. Certainly a bit of an improvement over the secret in the book.

Posted: 11/20/05 at 7:40pmI agree with this as well. Even though for back then, it would've been enough to make Glyde a ruined man. I think it's cool how they came up with a secret that would be believeable enough for the time period but more realistic for this century. Realistic in that they could see why Glyde would murder to keep this secret. They might not get why he'd be so willing if it was just that he'd lose a title.

SPOILER below.
The secret is, Sir Percival Glyde beat and raped Anne Catherick and then killed the child she'd gotten pregnant with.

I just saw Woman in White today. Maria was not in this show either. I saw Lisa. The cast is very talented. Of course, my favorite was Michael Ball. He was fantastic as Count Fosco. The only thing I did not care much for much was that moving scenery.

I agree with those who posted that the secret was believable, even in a 21st Century context, in that Glythe was a rapist and a murderer.
To respond to Broadwaybelter, the first time I listed to the cast recorded of WIW, I wasn't overly impressed either. However, as I listened to it more, I found nuances that I quite liked, and have found it a more mature and absorbing and less flambouyant story than POTO or some of ALW's other fare.

I think it's interesting that they changed the secret from the novel to make it more relevant/understandable for today's audiences. When I read the novel, I was disappointed with 'the secret', thinking it would be something more scandalous (it really doesn't seem like a big deal at all). And then I listened to the cast recording for the musical and they changed the secret to what it is now, which is something like what I was expecting when I read the book!
On a sidenote, anyone know if Maria and/or Jill will be in tomorrow (Sunday)?

Posted: 11/26/05 at 7:57pmWell I saw the show, and I have to say I thought it was terrible. I am not an ALW hater at all. I just really thought that this show wasn't very good.

Posted: 11/26/05 at 7:58pmElphie, that was my reaction to the book secret as well. But, remember, by the standards of the time period in which the book was set, that secret would have ruined Glyde, if it had been revealed. Society was very conscious of such things back then.

Posted: 11/26/05 at 8:04pmYou're right, kec. I had to remind myself of that while I was reading. I think it's funny that they changed it for the musical, though. They decided that they needed something more dramatic and shocking because of today's audiences!

I've yet to hear the Cast Album, but I've heard the Suite on Phantasia (with Sarah Chang and Julian Lloyd Webber). There's bits of the music in my head now which won't go away. I know which one of the pieces is Get Away with Anything, but I've been guessing the rest. There's one piece which sounds similar to "Longer I Live" from Wildhorn's Dtracula.. and that's the one that's stuck in my head. It's starting to give me the creeps too
Point is, I'm a fan of Lloyd Webber's musicals; and I love the sound of this one. I think it's better than Aspects of Love and (probably) Whistle Down the Wind (if it hadn't had Kiss I'd change my mind) and definitely ahead of Starlight Express and Joseph. I can't wait to hear the full CD
