Michael Wittenberg, Bernadette's late husband, was killed in a helicopter accident in Montenegro in September 2005. The "Whatever Happened to Baby Gin?" episode of WILL & GRACE with Bernadatte aired in May 2006.
Bernadette went back to work almost immediately (which was good therapy for her, per her own words). Her first public appearance after his death was a concert appearance several weeks later, plus she co-hosted LIVE WITH REGIS & KELLY shortly thereafter as well as a ABC TV pilot called ADOPTED, with Christine Baranski.
Re-watching this episode earlier, I've yet to see this reference to 'sad look on her face'. She looks pretty damn sharp to me and quite the perfect match to Megan Mullally's Karen.

A few corrections. Adopted was filmed the spring before her husband passed away.
She did not co-host Live with Regis and Kelly after her husband's death. She was a guest on the show in July of 2006 to promote the upcoming Broadway Barks. She looked wonderful though when Regis asked her a loaded "how have you been?" she seemed to brush it off with a "fine" and started talking about something else quickly. I do hope she will co-host again soon because she is wonderful in that role.
