I have a backup song (which is "Alto's Lament") If I don't find anything but the auditioners have already heard me sing that song. I want a song with a huge belt and a good range. I have 3 octaves in me but I've recently been sick so I don't want a song to go too far in my head voice. Mezzo, can belt up until about a D or an E flat (one octave up from middle C). Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

It's for "Into The Woods". I would like to be the witch, or little red riding hood.

You don't really need a huge belt for either of those roles, so you may want to go with something a little more.. understated?

Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

No I really want something with a belt. I know the directors very well as I've worked with them a lot, and they know I can sing, but they havn't seen me belt yet. Also I talked to one of them and they suggested a big song with a belt.

Great song but it's practically a duet.

It's not PRACTICALLY a duet, it is one.

What about "Always True to You" from Kiss Me, Kate?

What about Still Hurting, from The Last Five Years?
An AMAZING song.
but you will need sheet music, yes?
Who has sheet music for it here?
Anyone?

Yikes. Your best bet is to not take any of these suggestions. Talk about breaking the cardinal rules of audition songs.

A good start is usually to stay genre or composer related. Since it's Into the Woods, most Sondheim is up for grabs.

Though ITW is contemporary, it's not modern contemp. Picking pop-influcenced shows from the past 5 years or so is not a good bet (i.e. Wicked, TL5Y). Walking into an audition room with a JRB piece is almost never a good idea, not only are the horribly overdone (and butchered) but unless you KNOW the audition pianist has chops and killer sight-reading skills, you're setting yourself up for disaster.

A book of Sondheim should be in any musical theater singer's repertoire anyway, so go pick one up. You'll find many options there.

And it would help if you indicated up-tempo or ballad and age range as just requesting a belt piece doesn't exactly narrow it down.

Is anyone familiar with "the Last Five years"? What's Still Hurting about, really? I'm listening to it and I want to understand it more.

Still hurting is about how Cathy and Jamie broke up, because he was adulterous.
They had a messy breakup and she is sad.
Even after all of this time, she still loves him.
or, at least, that's what i got out of it!

Uh.... have you ever listened to the show? It's pretty evident if you listen.

Plus, if you search it on Wikipedia, then you can get all of the plot details.

If you can't figure out what the song is about, I wouldn't recommend singing it.

I have to agree with that you shouldn't do anything that has a pop edge. I would suggest looking at 'Hold On' from "The Secret Garden". It is a good belt song, a great acting piece and much more appropriate for ITW.

If you can figure out a way to do the belty stuff of Olive's, maybe "The I Love You Song" from Spelling Bee? It has a good vibe for ITW..

Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
