Are the theatres on Broadway dark on Dec.31? I'm planning a trip around that time, and wanted to know if I'd be able to see shows that night. Thanks!

I could've sworn that some shows add special performances that day...or at least around that time.

And the other thing about the Phantom Lady was, Bert, she realized, in the city that never sleeps... What did she realize, Kitten? That all the songs she'd listened to, all the love songs, that they were only songs. What's wrong with that? Nothing, if you don't believe in them. But she did, you see. She believed in enchanted evenings, and she believed that a small cloud passed overhead and cried down on a flower bed, and she even believed there was breakfast to be had... Where? On Pluto. The mysterious, icy wastes of Pluto.

I think each show is a little bit different. As it gets closer, there will be schedules online.

Most have only a matinee performance on Dec. 31. (That's when I'm seeing Woman in White.) A few have evening performances. Many then have New Year's Day performances. Watch for the holiday schedule.

Some schedules change just for the Holiday.
This year, I believe it's on a Sunday...so they may just keep it at its regularly scheduled matinee time.

"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive. "Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot." "No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one." Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.

Some have 6 o'clock curtains.

I do New Year's Eve in Times Square every year. The shows are on "holiday schedules" and that means some shows will have early curtains and others will not. Some shows will not perform at all that day but make up the performance some other time that week.

Last year there were a handful of shows that played on New Year's Eve. Many of them, like MAMMA MIA, added hefty stipends to the ticket prices, so check that out before you purchase tickets. Last year we saw LAUGH WHORE because it was virtually the only show that hadn't hiked the prices. It turned out to be the perfect New Year's Eve show.

The holiday schedules are usually announced a month earlier.

Be warned that the mid-town area has the pedestrian traffic in certain routes that night and getting from point "A" to point "B" can be a chore. This all starts at around 6 PM. If you have dinner reservations or theater tickets, make sure you are carrying them with you because the police will be checking you. No fooling!
