Job Details
Title The Pirate Queen - EPA
Category Performer
Description Book: Alain Boublil & Claude-Michel Schönberg
Music: Claude-Michel Schönberg
Lyrics: Alain Boublil & John Dempsey
Director: John McColgan
Choreographer: Mark Denby
Producer: Moya Doherty
Casting: Tara Rubin Casting

First rehearsal: Early ’06.
Out-of-town tryout, followed by opening on Broadway in late ’06.

The producers of Riverdance present Boublil & Schönberg’s The Pirate Queen, a new musical inspired by the legendary Grace O’Malley, a larger than life figure in Irish history. Set in 16th century Ireland and England, it tells the story of her losses and triumphs, both in her personal relationships and in her battles with the English in defending her beloved Ireland.

Seeking very versatile singers, as the score is a blend of pop, rock, musical theatre, and Irish music.

Grania: 20s-early 30s. Mezzo soprano (2-octave range) with strong belt to E. Headstrong, independent, intelligent, vibrant woman who chooses her own way from a young age. Athletic and agile. Fearless and unapologetic, without sacrificing her femininity. Fiercely loyal to those closest to her and to Ireland, she is a commanding leader and leads her pirate army successfully through many battles with the English. Agrees to an arranged marriage to help her country, in spite of her profound love for Tiernan. Starring role.

Tiernan: 20s-early 30s. High Baritone/Tenor with strong low notes. Grania’s best friend and companion from a young age. Handsome, gentle, loyal. Understands the need for her arranged marriage, but remains her steadfast protector despite the pain it causes him. Shares an unbreakable bond with Grania and sacrifices his own freedom to ensure hers. Leading role.

Dubdara: Late 40s-50s. Baritone with pop/rock edge. Widowed father of Grania. Encourages her independence, but always remains very protective of her. He is the able chieftain of the pirate army until an injury sidelines him and he gives over command of the men to Grania. Loves his daughter and his country deeply, and arranges Grania’s marriage to Donal to further the unity among the Irish clans.

Elizabeth I: Late 20s-30s. Strong classical/legit soprano. Queen of England. Regal, imperious, ambitious and often short-tempered. Feels both empowered and frustratingly burdened by her royal status. At first infuriated by Grania’s successes in defeating her men, she almost reluctantly learns to admire her strength and convictions as another powerful, determined woman. She ultimately negotiates the release of Grania, and later, Tiernan.

Bingham: 40s. Tenor with pop/rock edge. Confidante and advisor to the Queen. Appointed by Elizabeth to administer the ships and troops in battle with the Irish. Later, appointed governor of the conquered Irish lands. Ruthless, very adept at manipulating people to get what he wants. Despite his apparent loyalty to the Queen, is quite sexist, and has a particular distaste of Grania, which he can barely conceal.

Donal O’Flaherty: Late 20s-30s. Tenor/Bari-tenor with pop/rock edge. Overly fond of food, drink and especially women, a habit he doesn’t give up after his arranged marriage to Grania. A brutish, alpha-male type, yet he favors surrender over a dangerous battle with the English, prompting Grania to "dismiss him" as her husband after she leads the men and women to victory. Resentful of his wife’s superiority in battle and his "dismissal", and jealous of her connection with Tiernan, he plots with Bingham to betray her.

Well, if these are EPA's, when will they have an open call, or will they?
