are there any reprises that you think are better than the original in a show? honestly, i can think of three right now
Elaborate Lives (reprise) - Aida (SOOO GOOD!!)
I'll Cover You (reprise) - RENT
and although it SAYS a different name...
He Lives In you - Lion king (it says reprise on the cd.. although its a different name from they live in you, but i think its stronger than the original)
any others?

I can't do it alone from Chicago.
The original song bugs me. Ive never like it but I absoloutely loved the reprise.
"Like a deserted bride on her wedding night
All alone and skaking with fright
With her brand new hubby nowhere in sight
I simply cannot do it alooone!"
I LOVE THE LYRICS!

"The Color Purple reprise" - it's so moving with Celie singing by herself and the rest of the cast joining in.
Hairspray - I really like "Velma's Revenge", which is basically a reprise of "(The Legend of) Miss Baltimore Crabs". It's really short, so I can see why it wasn't included on the cast recording. The lyrics crack me up, and love the vocal riff on the last note:
Oh my god
That snake that sings
He's a puppet,
But I hold the purse and the strings!
God, I knew Negro Day
would bring chaos and change
Now he's pushing this pinko
who might give us all mange!
She's a blemish!
A blackhead that must be expelled
There's a standard of beauty
that must be upheld
You can say I'm a bigot,
but it just isn't true
Look, I love Sammy Davis,
and he's Black and a Jew!
But they better get set for a full out assault
They should never have boiled Ms. Baltimore Crabs!

Posted: 11/13/08 at 5:07pmThe reprise of "If I Loved You" in act 2 of Carousel is much more poignant than the longer duet version in Act 1, where the song is actually almost an extension of a long scene where Billy and Julie's mutual attraction leads to their hasty ill-fated marriage. In the reprise, which occurs after all the tragedy Billy has inflicted on Julie, his daughter and her family, shows the up to this point unrepentant Billy finally realizing that the only true thing he has ever felt was his love for Julie, and in retrospect, he has come to this realization too late to do anything about it and he despairingly sings that Julie will never know that he really loved her because he himself did not know it until this moment. This is especially evident in Gordon MacRae's rendition in the otherwise flawed 1956 film version (flawed dramatically, not vocally - vocally the 1956 sound track is still the greatest recording ever of Carousel.) Although possessing one of the most beautiful voices of the 20th Century, MacRae was never known to be a great actor, but his heartbreaking reprise of "If I Loved You" is an example of great acting and singing at its best.

The reprise of 5:15 in Grey Gardens, although way too brief to be better than the show starter. I love how the tone has switch from joy and excitement to fear and apprehension. I wish they would have written more to it, because it is so haunting and beautiful and truly foreshadowing of what is to come.
