Hey guys,
I'm doing a research paper about how the music during the Great Depression reflected the views of the American public. (eg. Brother Can You Spare a Dime?) If you have any knowledge about the Great Depression & music/theatre, please let me know. I'll take just about anything, I'm still in the research stages of the paper.

Some things I have been working on..
42nd Street
Porgy and Bess
Anything Goes

Thank you for your help.

The Cradle Will Rock

"You're the worst thing to happen to musical theatre since Andrew Lloyd Webber!" --Family Guy

"Shut up! It's been 29 years!!!" --the incomparable Patti LuPone in her MUCH DESERVED Tony acceptance speech for Gypsy.

Check out Stanley Green's book on musicals of the 1930's. I believe it was called RING BELLS! SING SONGS! and the DaCapo reprint simply called it BROADWAY MUSICALS OF THE 30s. Irving Berlin's revue AS THOUSANDS CHEER was quite topical.

the PBS documentary special that ran in three parts (where Julie Andrews hosted - Broadway the American Musical??? )had a whole section on the Great Depression and Broadway I believe. Maybe if you can get your hands on the Dvds, they might be helpful

I didn't even think about the PBS special. I'll try to get my hands on that era, that would be a great resource! I will definitely look into the other books mentioned too, thanks for your help everyone!
