Wow! I didn't know that with a musical with no exact racial requirements, segregation was still so prominant!
(Martha Graham from a letter to Agnes de Mille) "There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening That is translated through you into action, And because there is only one of you in all time, This expression is unique. If you block it, It will never exist through any other medium And be lost. The world will never have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is, Nor how valuable it is, Nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours, clearly and directly, To keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep open and aware Directly to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open. No artist is pleased. There is no satisfaction whatever at any time. There is only a queer, divine dissatisfaction, A blessed unrest that keeps us marching And makes us more alive than others."
The Pearl Bailey/Cab Calloway company of HELLO, DOLLY! was every bit as enjoyable as the previous casts of the show. There was plenty of talent of stage and Pearl's personality was truly suited to the role.
However, it was still HELLO, DOLLY! Don't be distracted by the breakneck tempos of the recording--no cast could sustain those tempos 8 times a week! It's great to listen to, but impossible to perform.
What made the Pearl Bailey version so special was the "third act" that Bailey and Calloway did after curtain calls. They sat on stools on the ramp and performed chestnuts from their days in vaudeville (Bailey) and Big Bands (Calloway).
I saw that version of the show 8 times and drove down to DC for Bailey's "farewell" performance in the revival.
Can Phylicia sing? Man, she would be a gorgeous, glorious Dolly!
"Winning a Tony this year is like winning Best Attendance in third grade: no one will care but the winner and their mom."

"I have also met him in person, and I find him to be quite funny actually. Arrogant and often misinformed, but still funny."

Phyllicia is hardly Lillias White or Melba Moore, but she has a pleasant voice and has done a lot of musical theatre throughout her career. I absolutely CANNOT see her as Dolly, though.
Give Audra a few more years (just to age mind you!) and she would be awesome!
"All I ask of you is one thing: please don't be cynical. I hate cynicism -- it's my least favorite quality and it doesn't lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you're kind, amazing things will happen."
