Cast albums are relatively cheap to produce.
The costs of doing a cast album could be put into a show's budget and the potential profit center could be great.
Why give the money to a record company that doesn't know how to market a cast album when the show's investors could get a bigger slice of that pie?

Inner City was recorded. I have the LP. It just hasn't been released on CD yet (but probably will). There are hundreds of recordings not yet released on CD, but it is happening quite often. For example, Mexican Hayride, Arms and the Girl, Texas Li'l Darlin' and others were released this month as well as a new musicals like Johnny Guitar and new recordings of shows previously recorded like Lucky Stiff.
How many times does this have to be said? Cast recordings do not need to be "saved" because they are not in danger. There was one article on the subject that was basically one person's opinion, nothing more than that.

Most of the items on my Christmas/Chanukah/Birthday list are cast albums.
The others are books about musicals, musicals on DVD, and librettos.
Oh, and an iPod. I do need SOME variety.
