The lady is fierce as Joanne in "Company". I thought her performance was brilliant and I am so sad that she was over looked when some others in that slot weren't as divalicious!

Other people were just considered better. It's like asking why Spamalot won oveR Piazza, these are things we will never know or fully comprehend,

She really was overlooked...a terrific performance.
She wasn't that good.
And she had Stritch and Monk pre date her.

I would have thought that she might have gotten nominated over Rebecca Luker......

Rooyyyyyyyyyyse! Royyyyyyyyse, roiiiiiiiiise!
It's pretty upsetting that 'Company' had such a strong ensemble cast who all do amazing work on that stage eight times a week, yet only one of them has gained Tony recognition. Very sad, very sad inded. ;_;
I think Doyle's shows are so ensemble-driven that it becomes hard to single out a performance. I personally was very much impressed by both Barbara Walsh and Heather Laws, and I can't imagine how they would nominate Rebecca Luker over any of these two. Walsh's final scene really got to me and I thought she played it off so well with Esparza. It was a highlight of the show for me.
I also don't get how Heather Laws didn't get a nomination, she was fantastic and interestingly enough the two actresses to play the role before her got nods. Oh well.
Because everyone knows that Mary Louise Wilson will likely win. Orfeh was given a nod to bump Legally Blonde's number, apologizing for the Best Musical snub. The toher three were nominated to fill out the category, as kind of a recognition of their past work. I don't think any of this is fair, as I think voters and nominators (and critics for that matter) should go into a show with no preconceived notions about the show or the actors.
C is for Company, that made my morning :)
I didn't care for Barbara when I saw the show, but her performance has really grown on me from listening to her on the COMPANY cd. I think she probably should've gotten a nomination over some of the women in the Featured Actress catergory, but really, if ANY actress was to be nominated from COMPANY, it would've been Heather Laws. In my opinion!
This is why I think they need a new category for Best Ensemble. I know everyon'es going to disagree with me and it'll never happen and there are already too many categories, but seriously, it IS really hard to single people out in this show, and ensembles in general deserve recognition for supporting and fleshing out the show

I agree - personally I would have nominated Walsh over Laws, but thats just me. Its really unfortunate that she was left out - she sets the stage for Raul's Being Alive

I have to disagree with you Born To Reign. Orfeh more than deserved her nomination and IMO is the best competition to Mary Louise Wilson. It's really a shame though. A lot of great performers didn't get nominated such as Heather Laws, Barbara Walsh, Linda Balgord, Erin Davie, Mary Birdsong, Megan Sikora, and Deidre Goodwin just to name a few. I was incredibly surprised to see both Charlotte D'Amboise and Rebecca Luker's name on the list because i thought it would just be one, then Barbara Walsh. I also thought Ruth Gottschall put on a much better performance than Rebecca, but that's just me.
I actually agree, mungo!! I just didn't want to get yelled at for giving Orfeh a shout-out. And I agree that there are better people who should have filled the category!
Am I the only perosn who LOVED Angel Desai in Company? I thought she looked great, her acting was terrific, and her voice is so unique. It also helps that she sings one of my favorite songs ever
Rebecca Luker is wonderful, but Mrs. Banks is a very small role. I would've nominated Heather Laws, Barbara Walsh, Angel Desai (I adored her too
), even Elizabeth Stanley over Luker. I know the award is pretty much guaranteed to go to Wilson (as guaranteed as these things can be!), but it would've been nice to acknowledge the amazing ladies of 'Company'!
TOTALLY! I also think Kristin Huffman had Sarah down to a T
I was disappointed as well that Ms. Walsh was not nominated. She was unbelievable. When she stares at raul after ladies who lunch, it's just fantastic, more is said in that one scene then most of the dialouge in the play. To me the other stand out in Company, was the the girl who played April. she was just fantastic. She was hystirical, beautiful, and yet there was a sadness in her. She created what could have been a very 2 dimensial carachter and made her very 3 dimensional.
I think Elaine Stritch is the main reason she didn't get nominated. The role will always belong to her.
you're probably right, but that doesn't make it fair. I actually am not a big stritch fan, and don't like her on the OBCR. I also watched the documentary about recording the cast album, and don't see how she would have been attractive to Bobby. Barbara Walsh just exudes sex in the role, and I believe that when she asks Bobby "when are we going to make it?" he mulls it over. I don't know how he could have reacted to Stritch with a straight face.

The category was swamped with good actresses, both leading and featured. I would have traded Deirdre or Natalie for Charlotte and put Desai, Walsh, or Laws instead of Luker. It wasn't Luker's best work, even though she was still pretty amazing.

I agree about Elizabeth Stanley - I thought she was fantastic. And what a Broadway debut! She really held a mirror to Bobby's actions, I thought.
This whole Stritch thing has been discussed in another thread, but I'm maintaining that if that's the reason she wasnt nominated, it really is unfortunate.
Walsh gave me chills at the end of Act 1 as Bobby is ending Marry Me a Little, when she assumes her sort of characteristic position against that big column - its so sexual and she plays it in a very subtle way. And their supposed age differences make the dynamics in that relationship so interesting... its so characteristic of that 30 something male falling for the attractive middle aged woman.
