City of Angels - The ending
 Oct 5 2015, 02:55:28 PM

Thanks for the responses. If anyone else has any insight (especially if you saw City of Angels in previews on Broadway or even better if you read a first draft of the show) I would love for you to share your thoughts.

n12 – The Donmar ending sounds interesting (and less forced than on Broadway). I wish they had released more footage from their production. The clips I’ve seen look great and the reviews were pretty fantastic.

City of Angels - The ending
 Oct 2 2015, 09:47:47 PM

I’m going to be directing a regional production of City of Angels this winter and I wanted to see if anyone out there had some answers to my questions on the ending.

First of all, I love the show. I think it’s smart, hilarious, and has a great score. But the ending feels so inept and thrown together. To me, it reads like a half baked idea in a first draft. It makes me wonder if the original Broadway production (which I know didn’t have an out of

FOLLIES in Phoenix

“Now folks we bring you, Direct from Phoenix, Live and in person…”

I know this show is very near and dear to a lot of hearts on this board, so I just wanted to alert those interested that I’m directing a production of Follies in Arizona. This will be the first time that Follies has ever been produced by a local theater company. We open on Friday and run through March 15th.

While I rarely post anything, I’ve been reading this board for about a decade. Throughout that time I’ve loved all the stories, faded memories, and staunch opinions everyone has shared about this beautiful musical. From Reginald Tresilian and Pal Joey’s tale of the “crazed collector” to all the generous posters who sent me unofficial audio recordings (they know who they are), so many people on this board are to thank for helping me solidify my directorial vision for Follies.

Our cast features two legitimate Broadway Babies in Kelli James Chase as Carlotta Campion and Patti Davis Suarez as Hattie Walker. Kelli James Chase was in the original Broadway cast of Les Miserables and later became the first replacement Eponine after Frances Ruffelle left the company. Before making her Broadway debut, Ms. James Chase portrayed the role of Peron’s Mistress in the Los Angeles production of Evita. Patti Davis Suarez made her Broadway debut in How Now, Dow Jones. She then appeared in the original Broadway production of Promises, Promises and later joined the Broadway cast of Applause, performing the role of Eve Harrington opposite the Margo Channing of Lauren Bacall and Anne Baxter.

As I’m sure you can imagine, getting the opportunity to tackle this rarely produced show is a dream come true. I’m very lucky to be surrounded by not only a top notch cast of all star Arizona actors, but also a phenomenal production team. Misha Shields (Off Broadway’s The Orion Experience) is creating some truly spectacular original choreography (and yes, we are doing the Bolero) and our musical director, Steve Hilderbrand, will be conducting a live orchestra of 15 musicians in the pit.

You can read more about our production in the articles below. If anyone has any questions, thoughts, etc. please feel free to post them here or send me a PM. And if you happen to be in Phoenix, come check it out. You’ll be so glad you came.

Your fellow Follies fanatic,
Phillip

Rob Marshall to Bring FOLLIES to the Big Screen?
 Dec 5 2014, 06:36:16 PM
A few months ago, I wrote a little article for Stage Light Magazine on the Broadway musicals I'd like to see turned into movies. Follies was number 1 on the list.

http://www.stagelightmagazine.com/7-broadway-musicals-that-need-to-be-movies/

Here's what I wrote about Follies…

Speaking of die hard fans, there will certainly be some riots if Follies gets botched on the way to the big screen. I know this to be true because I will be the one leading the charge. This is another rumored and “in development” project that is long overdue. Here’s a fascinating article detailing an ‘almost-was’ film version from 1972 featuring a who’s who of former MGM legends:

http://www.theparisreview.org/blog/2013/11/29/loveland/

In today’s world, I would happy to have Mike Nichols directing, with Bob Avian recreating and adapting the original Michael Bennett choreography. Who would be better than Annette Bening as the coldly sophisticated Phyllis Rogers Stone opposite Kevin Kline as the successful but lost Ben Stone? In the pivotal role of Sally Durant Plummer, Emma Thompson would be absolutely heart breaking. Rounding out the two main couples, let’s add Kevin Spacey as the loyal but neglected Buddy Plummer.

In the featured roles, I would kill to see Ann-Margret as Carlotta Campion, Barbara Harris as Hattie Walker, Carol Burnett as Stella Deems, Leslie Caron as Solange La Fitte, Teresa Stratas as Heidi Schiller, and Dick Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore as Theodore and Emily Whitman. Well, one can dream…

GAY CAMP at The Duplex
 Nov 8 2013, 03:07:05 PM
WARNING! SHAMELESS PLUG/SHILL ALERT!

Hi All,

I just wanted to let you know about a show I'm directing that's about to re-open at The Duplex Cabaret for an extended run. Our first performance is this Saturday November 9th at 10pm and we are currently scheduled to run through December 20th. I'm a long time reader of this board (occasional poster...usually only about things related to Follies), but I thought some of you might be interested in checking out the show. If not, feel free to post some entertaining gifs to this thread

It's gay, it's camp, it's GAY CAMP!

GAY CAMP is a quick-change farce that follows the stories of several young campers who have been sent away to a gay reform camp. Following it's sold-out run as part of the 2012 New York International Fringe Festival and subsequent Fringe Encore Series, the show’s creators brought GAY CAMP to The Duplex for a sold out summer run. Now the production is returning to The Duplex for only four performances this November and December.

Tickets are $10 (with a 2 drink minimum). Click below to make your reservations for any of the performances-

Here's some of the buzz surrounding last year's sold-out FringeNYC run and Encore extension:

WINNER: FringeNYC 2012 “Best Ensemble”
BACKSTAGE: “Critics’ Pick”
TIME OUT NY: “Critics’ Choice”, “Christian Mansfield, Philip Mutz and Ken Urso are adorable, boundlessly energetic and rarely less than hilarious.”
NYTHEATRE.COM: “Gay Camp, the screamingly funny FringeNYC show that is completely and utterly over the top — as it should be.”
THEATER IN THE NOW: “three phenomenal comedic actors”
THEATERMANIA: “detail-rich staging from director Phillip Fazio”
THEATRE REVIEWS LIMITED: “the cast of three are absolutely hysterical”

Grey Gardens

I asked someone who worked on both the off broadway and broadway version why Sara Gettelfinger was replaced. He told me that the producers who became involved with the move to broadway said they would only move the production if she was replaced. Apparently they were the only people seriously interested in moving the show and the only way for Grey Gardens to get to broadway was with them. Nobody else was going to put up the money.

Incase anyone is interested, it looks like Sara Gettelfi

Fell down a youtube rabbit hole in anticipation of the concert and I found this montage from the Lincoln Center Theater revival. So many great memories of that production, can't wait to create some new ones tonight!

I walked up to the Box Office at 1pm and got a single orchestra for tonight for $25 with my very old student ID. I had called this morning and spoke with someone who said they were selling them. Worth giving a call and stopping by. I couldn't be more excited to see it tonight!
Fringe Encore Series
 Sep 7 2012, 10:55:46 PM
As I've said before, in full disclosure, I directed the FringeNYC show Gay Camp. Yes the title says it all. It’s gay, it’s camp, it’s Gay Camp. We've been invited to join Fringe Encore, one of only ten shows in Fringe Encore to also win a Fringe Award (we were awarded Best Ensemble). We sold out our entire run in FringeNYC and got some pretty good notices too. If you're interested in the show check out our website-

So, full disclosure, I’m directing a Fringe show this summer, Gay Camp, and yes the title says it all. It’s gay, it’s camp, it’s Gay Camp. The show opened last night to a sold out crowd (we actually had to turn away about 10 people). Our audience seemed to really enjoy the performance, so hopefully that will translate into some good buzz. The show has been an absolute blast to work on and if you come check it out I can promise you’ll have a good time.
Anyone seeing FOLLIES in LA tonight?

Is CTG not selling tickets for the last few weeks of their run yet? On their website it looks like tickets are only on sale through June 9th.

I've been thinking about this for a while and I think my (realistic) picks would be Emma Stone as Sally and Daniel Radcliffe as The M.C.
