re: What would it take to make a great jukebox musical?

One artist that could probably have a very nice jukebox musical would be Meatloaf. That's probably because almost every Jim Steinman song ever written was done so in some sort of theatrical context.

I've heard Meat (Mr. Loaf) talk about a musical that Steinman always wanted to do called "Neverland" A lot of his stuff is written with a thought as to how it might work in that.

re: How did Mamma Mia get it right?

I think the biggest reason Mamma Mia worked while others didn't was the fact that people did NOT know a lot of the songs. Sure they knew the hits but I'll bet that, oustide of the biggest ABBA fans, no one knew Our Last Summer or Under Attack or probably 60% of the songs in the show.

That is a benefit because people don't already have their own personal "stories" attatched to the songs. A much larger group of people know all the "Lennon" songs by heart and probably view their presence i

Adding this third element of "celebrity" status ticks me off even more than the singing versus acting discussion.

All the discussion about Wicked et. al and the various talents of the different Elphabas got me to thinking. If you could select a performer for a musical lead role, and assuming they were very good in both areas, would you give up some acting talent for better singing ability or vice versa?

Personally I think it depends primarily on a more comedic role versus dramatic. I think lighter roles need better actors while dramatic roles need better singers.

For example I would pr

re: Godspell -- is it really that trippy?

I've always liked Godspell when done right. The movie obviously doesn't hold up well. I watched it not too long ago and became EXTREMELY uncomfortable at the end of "All For The Best" when it wraps up with a song and dance on the roof of a still-under-construction World Trade Center. That alone sucked all the life out of the movie.
