it's my understanding that Geraldine Page's loss for Blithe Spirit is often described as quite surprising. were dana ivey's duel nominations for hearbreak house and sunday in the park considered shocking?

Casting without Considering Appearance Jan 16
2013, 01:02:58 AM
This is from Vijay Prashad's Everybody was Kung Fu Fighting "When Martin Luther King Jr. and others turned to the question of poverty ( to launch the "poor people's movement), they made a claim for a maximalist notion of "human rights" - not just the right to civil liberties, but also to a home, to a job, to education, and to dignity (artlces 23-27 of the 1948 declaration.) Instead of taking on this more comprehensive demand, the civil rights movement was offered a modest program

Did Anyone See Swados' RUNAWAYS? Nov 25
2012, 11:52:04 AM
I first encountered runaways at a michigan high school theatre competition. It was done by a high school as their entry for a fully staged production. Other selections that year (i think) were cat on a hot tin roof (with skipper wandering around as a ghost), waiting for lefty, and quilters. we submitted ramon delgado's the little toy dog. as an adult i've looked at the piece for musical scenes and monologues for students. the material seems a like one might hear from parents about

If Shirley MacLaine were to return to Broadway... Oct 27
2012, 12:28:23 PM
^ instead of vanessa? re carlotta: yes, from follies. not phantom. although she might make a fabulous page boy. ann miller was an older carlotta wasn't she? - not that it would make the age work, but precedent has been set correct?

If Shirley MacLaine were to return to Broadway... Oct 27

IIRC, most of her stage work was in musicals. I agree that Mme Armfeldt would be very interesting. her carlotta would be plausible to me.

Next Sondheim Revival? Sep 7
2012, 08:09:43 PM
i've also always been rather fond of Marry Me a Little. I think in part because of the rueful tone to the piece. IIRC, the premise is two lonely people on a Saturday night. the songs explore the central theme of loneliness. It has always seemed in line with Sondheim's other work. I think it's a lovely little gem of a show. Cheap to produce, but with a really nice meaty material.

Next Sondheim Revival? Sep 7
