NY TIMES - MHE IN 10 BEST OF 2024! Dec 9
2024, 11:18:49 PM
Bravo to the director Michael Arden, the authors, and especially Darren & Helen for the amazing rave reviews and The NY Times selection as one of the 10 Best shows of 2024. Thrilling to see this show so honored not only by the critics but by so many theatergoers whose comments after seeing the show are glowing.

Faster than Lestat which should have closed in San Francisco where it bombed in its tryout.

MAYBE HAPPY ENDING Reviews Nov 12
2024, 03:39:22 PM
First new musical to receive unanimous raves in two seasons -- the Times favorably compares it to several recent Tony winners. So happy for all involved, especially for Darren Criss who made such a passionate commitment to this show. Hopefully, the show will catch on since Broadway needs a warm, charming and moving musical. This has been a tough box office this fall except for McNeal and Sunset, so a new hit is very welcome.

Name a song from a musical you were sorry to lose in its film version as well as one you were happy to gain. Oct 24
2024, 04:49:22 PM
I greatly miss No Way to Stop It from Sound of Music since it is a major thematic song about accommodating Nazis. I miss Bushel and a Peck from Guys and Dolls, but like the addition of Adelaide. I miss Shall I Tell You what I Think of You and I Have Dreamed from King and I, I like the addition of the new Glamorous Life in Night Music movie (though the movie is weak). Miss Music and the Mirror from Chorus Line movie (and that movie is terrible). Miss the Bernstein songs from On The Town

COUP DE THÉÂTRE's - favorites? Oct 16
2024, 02:02:46 PM
You named so many great theatre moments. I would add Mary Martin's Flying in through the nursery windows in Peter Pan which was breathtaking. I would also cite the original Nicholas Nickelby staging with the cart going off under the bridge. The London Bridge sequence on the revolving set in the original production of Oliver! Hal Prince's original staging of the final scene in the original Cabaret where the characters repeat key lines. Hal Prince's and Boris Aronson's arrival o

MAYBE HAPPY ENDING. BREAK A LEG Oct 16
2024, 01:54:20 PM
BREAK A LEG for the company of Maybe Happy Ending. Finally, an original musical, not another revival, or a weakly plotted jukebox retread, or a movie desecrated with a generic mediocre score. Great to see Darren Criss originating a role. Broadway needs more original new musicals. Last season had several good ones from Outsiders to Suffs to Gatsy and Sondheim's final show. We need more new shows, so good luck to this season's newest show

FORBIDDEN BROADWAY Coming to Broadway This Summer? Oct 14
2024, 07:02:26 PM
Surpised and sad to see this close abruptly. Is this the shortest Forbidden Broadway run? The extremely short run suggests a Broadway run would have been a financial bust. Maybe many jukebox shows and/or the fluff "movie-make-into-a-musical-for-no-artisti-reason" (e.g. BTTF) have become parodies of themselves.

California Shakespeare Closes After 50 Years Oct 11
2024, 02:51:13 PM
Many Bay Area theatre companies and arts organizations have cut back due to sparse audiences and loss of subscribers . Even before the pandemic, audiences were getting sparse; after covid, audiences have almost disappeared for many venues. SF Opera, SF Symphony, SF Ballet have all made cuts to their season offerings and often offer substantial discounts. Best of Broadway offers substantial discounts for most shows except Wicked. 42nd Street Moon, ACT, even Theatreworks in Palo Alt

The Public announces two new musicals for 2025 season Sep 25
2024, 02:41:47 PM
Schmidtand Jones did a wonderful version of Our Town but the rights were pulled. Kander and Ebb did an interesting version of Skin, but the rights were pulled. The Wilder estate -- which made millions off of Hello Dolly -- seems to have a history of granting the musical rights, then pulling them after regional or off-Broadway productions. I would love to hear the Kander and Ebb version. It is an interesting play for musical adaptation.

Rob Marshall to direct new film adaptation of GUYS & DOLLS Sep 25
2024, 02:14:00 PM
Would Guys and Dolls appeal to modern movie audiences? The West Side Story remake died at the box office, and it was very well filmed. Guys and Dolls harkens back almost a century ago to a long-gone New York. Lots of wonderful casting suggestions in the comments, and Rob Marshall is a top choice for director -- but is there a sufficient market to recover the enormous costs of a film musical? Didn't Les Mis underperform at the box office, &nbs

Darren Criss and Helen J Shen Will Lead MAYBE HAPPY ENDING on Broadway Sep 9

I agree these songs are very Sondheim-like in musical style. Nice to hear an original score rather than another song catalogue score. Hope the show does well.
