BACK TO THE FUTURE will close January 5, 2025

In the end, the Broadway production will probably have lost its entire $23.5 million capitalization. But an 18-month run on Broadway is a very solid amount of exposure which gives it big branding for worldwide theatre markets. And they get to amortize a lot of the cost of the physical production if it is in fact moving to Germany. Not insignificant!

SMASH On Broadway reveals casting
 Oct 23 2024, 02:27:15 PM

I think SMASH falls into the "cult IP" category of adaptation. In other words IP that probably didn't perform particularly well financially or even necessarily critically in its original form but found a small and strong following (or high level of infamy). Examples include Hairspray (tiny off-beat movie most people don't know), Little Shop of Horrors (on many "worst movie ever" lists), The Producers (mixed reviews, poor BO performance), Kinky Boots (little in

Some people on reddit theorized Amadeus or The Illusionist. ALW said the show is set in Vienna in 1900 which eliminates Amadeus. The Illusionist is set precisely in Vienna in 1900. My money's on that.

Mama, I’m a Big Girl Now!

It seems not too dissimilar from something like The Midtown Men, collectively capitalizing on their association with one particularly beloved show to book gigs around the country. Another example would be Broadway Princess Party that became the Disney Princess concerts. This sounds a little more like a "3-for-1-woman show" (to attempt to coin a phrase), using their joint and individual experiences and relationship to give it more story to hang onto than a typical concert. Assum

Agree 100%. I've never seen a musical so radically reinvented in its staging that it felt like it became brand new. And where the vision of the director made a show that's always felt pretty mid to me allowed it to become one of the most exciting theatrical experiences I've ever had.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK On Broadway - P/reviews & News Thread

Seems like it's rare for many news organizations to even wait until the show is over. I remember in early days of the internet when a lot of reviews would post at midnight eastern time. These days I've sometimes seen reviews posted shortly after the opening night performance has started.

I’m impressed that no reviews have come out yet where usually there are several by this time. Could it be an embargo issued by the producers to respect the artists on their opening night and wait until later in the eve?

17 Again: The Musical

Zachary and Weiner are credited on the Japanese site. Broadway Records also just released a recording of their Secondhand Lions score.

Guess Bandstand isn't such a dead horse after all. So 11 new musicals with original scores and Holiday Inn? Is that the 12 the NYT is referring to?

The Hamiltonys

PianoMann, you may be right on scenic design since it's not as flashy as She Loves Me. Choreography, though, I think Hamilton is brilliant and unconventional. I'm calling choreo for Hamilton.

To me, the only award that Hamilton is nominated for which seems up for grabs and will likely be a non-Hamilton win is Best Actress in a Musical. Everything else seems wrapped up. Is that the conventional thinking out there? Also, are people leaning more toward Leslie Odom, Jr. for Best Actor in a Musical or do people think Tony nominators see Lin-Manuel's name and just check the box?

I think Legally Blonde actually lost money in the UK. Supposedly it started out strong, got some awards, but then dropped off and didn't recoup.

I'm not sure anyone is looking that close in the case of Aladdin. The committee probably took it on faith based on how ever much 'new' material Disney is claiming is in the show. Otherwise they'd rule that there are only 4 new songs (plus a few reprises) that would be considered written for the stage. Between the movie songs and 'cut' movie songs included in the show, there are 8 old songs and 2 or 3 reprises. Can't imagine how that would qualify. Since the 50% rule was made, I've gotta believe
