re: Barrett and Skinner singing at Carnegie Hall
 Apr 1 2005, 10:42:11 AM
Well, if you can get to the SF Bay Area, Brent Barrett is singing in the annual fundraising gala for 42nd St. Moon. The gala takes place 05/23/05 in San Francisco. Other stars are Andrea Marcovicci and Lea DeLaria. Last year it was a $150 ticket (it's a benefit, remember.)

Tix go on sales 4/15/05 at 415-392-4400.

So, if you can't make it to Carnegie Hall, how about San Francisco?

re: Is it really the end of the Broadway Star?
 Dec 21 2004, 12:17:12 PM
I think the writer may be write that the big Broadway musical star will never again be the constant presence that a Merman was, as an example.

But he's blaming it n the wrong phenomenon by focusing on oft-absent stars. It seems like a low blow to blame these actors, when their salaries are likely a very small percentage of the budget of a musical...and it's the astronomical budgets that are reducing the viability of launching new, innovative musicals.

Coincidentally I wrote a rather long post about this on 42nd St. Moon's blog yesterday:

Hi again.

So I saw the show Saturday night, and it was really cute. And the rendition of "Happily Ever After" that Lea does in the second act will just blow your socks off. it's like a mini tutorial in how to build and deliver a song.

I also got to chat with her for an "exclusive" blog interview.

So if you go to the blog you'll find:

1. The interview with Lea
2. A link to the Chronicle review (little man sitting up clapping)
3. A link to my very own bl

The first thing my boyfriend brought up was the possibility that back then people wouldn't have bought a black woman as a medieval queen, and I know *he's* not a racist, so perhaps that was part of it as you suggest.

Anyway, they just released a one-day discount promo for blog readers only. All day Wednesday you can order $20 tickets for any weekday performance.

Apparently the show is selling REALLY well because of Lea's presence in the cast.

The Eureka is a really sma

"The tidbit about Jane White was true, however the author completely misconstrued the situation. [snip] ...the author made this seem like Ms. White was forced against her will and was made to do this because of racial prejudices, when it was not so."

I think you're reading a little more into my blog post than I intended. I never implied Ms. White was "forced", but that she did know that was the only way she would be given the role.

And, whether Abbot went for white-face because of his own feelings or anticipating an audience's feeling, the choice was made because of *somebody's* racial prejudices. I didn't assign racial prejudice to Abbot particularly in my post.

I was mostly expressing my own personal shock at learning that trivia, not really ascribing any particular emotions/thoughts to the real players involved, who obviously I don't know.

As an added note that I didn't put in the story online, the 42nd St. Moon founder also told me that he had read that getting her first big break in white-face did end up messing with Ms. White a bit...not just emotionally, but practically...as it confused casting people. He couldn't remember where he had read it, so I didn't put that part.

If you go look at her IBDB posting, it is strange that she didn't have very much career action after "Mattress":
http://ibdb.com/person.asp?id=64748

I'm going to post a bit about this conversation in the blog, along with some other links I've found about Jane White, doing a little research just now.

And yes, I had heard the anecdote about Nancy Walker. I'm sure she might have been entirely serviceable in the role, but Abbot created a new star instead!

Lea DeLaria as Princess Winnifred in SF this month
 Dec 4 2004, 03:56:33 PM
Comedienne, chanteuse and Broadway star Lea DeLaria is starring as Princess Winnifred in 42nd St. Moon's production of "Once Upon a Mattress." Previews start Wednesday, and the show runs through 1/2/05.

You can read more abut the show and Lea's local appearances at 42nd St. Moon's blog:

42nd St. Moon's "Hooray for What!" (SF)
 Nov 15 2004, 05:19:44 PM
Saw "Hooray For What!" at yesterday's matinee, surrounded by a very un-lively audience.

I posted a full review at my personal blog:
http://homepage.mac.com/elisa_camahort/iblog/C326499484/E972434140/index.html

Bottom line: This is the 42nd St. Moon I know & love: taking an old and truly "lost" gem and restoring it, focusing on the music and the vocals. Most of the topical humor manages to survive in the present-day...the authors clearly understood which contemporary newsmakers were going to make a lasting impact. The humor is fairly "groaner"-oriented...puns & the like. but there are also some great moments of ironic humor...including my favorite scene in the second act...a fashion show you have to see to believe.

You can learn more about the show itself and its history/background at 42nd St. Moon's blog.

Mark Lundholm's one-man show "Addicted" is a truly laugh-out-loud-while-you-cringe experience.

It's extended until 11/14 at the Marines Memorial Theatre in San Francisco.

Discount Tix Avail. for 42nd St. Moon Blog readers
 Oct 27 2004, 06:49:36 PM
42nd St. Moon is presenting another lost gem, "Hooray For What!" from 11/10-11/28 at the Eureka Theatre in SF.

"HFW" features a Harold Arlen score and a wild book by Yip Harburg.

San Francisco has been a big part of the recent anti-war movement, and 'Hooray's comic send-up of fascism, war profiteering and jingoism rings as true today as it did in pre-WWII 1937.

You can learn more about this show's fascinating history at the 42nd St. Moon blog:
http://42stmoon.blogspot.com

42nd St. Moon is offering discount tickets for blog readers to every performance (excluding Sunday matinees.)

You can learn more about it at the blog or directly at this URL. Be sure to get your discount code, then call for tickets:

Sa Francisco's 42nd St. Moon's new blog and season opener
 Sep 14 2004, 10:48:09 PM
42nd St. Moon is a San Francisco theatre that specializes in "lost" musicals of the golden era (athough they occasionally do shows that aren't so lost and sometimes even from a more modern era.)

Anyway, I've started keeping a blog with/for them at:

http://42stmoon.blogspot.com

Their fall season opener is 'Can-Can' (which Encores did last year.)

They're offering a discount to blog readers, so if any of you are SF Bay Area locals, please do check it out.

And in any case, you might have fun reading the blog (I hope.)

OK. I've posted links to both my and another blogger's review of the PREVIEW of "A Little Princess" over at the TheatreWorks blog:

http://theatreworks.blogspot.com

I will continue to post reviews as they come on that blog and encourage anyone who has seen it to post their comments to any blog entry in the comments section.

Hi:

Yes, Heidi Ettinger did the sets for this production at TheatreWorks.

I'm seeing the first preview tonight, so I'll be sure to post my review :)

Hey!

I'm the BlogMaster for TheatreWorks' new blog:

http://theatreworks.blogspot.com

Tehre's a lot of stuff on the blog about this production of "A Little Princess", including an offer for 1/2 price tickets to the two previews of LP, only for blog readers.

I'm going on Wednesday the 25th to the 1st preview and can't wait.

It sounds really cool (although since the book was one of my favorites as a child I'm a little concerned about plot changes.)

The latest link I put up was to a clip of Andrew Lippa singing a song from the show. He sounds terrific.
