Dear World Updated Version???

I just received a notice in the mail from a theatre doing DEAR WORLD in it's upcoming season. I was really excited to hear that people are still doing this show. I love the music and although I know the show has flaws I find it really charming.

You could imagine my surprise when in bold it says "New Version by David Thompson (2006)"

I knew Jerry Herman wanted to update it and bring it back to Broadway, but my question is... although they didn't bring it back to Broadway, is this that update?? and does anyone know how they updated it??

Thanks.

Having not read it, I can only hope they've gone away from the terrible, awful, dreadful Valency translation of LA FOLLE DE CHAILLOT and returned to Giraudoux's original. DEAR WORLD was based heavily on what Valency did, not what Giraudoux wrote.

I hope they got rid of that god-awful title song.
most of the meterial in that show is excellent, the ballads, the tea party is incredibly fun, as is "Garbage" but some of the other songs are sooo labored.

I Don't Want to Know is a stunning song as are some others, however I honestly don't see the merit in fixing it. It has a good, often spectacular score that would have to be drastically changed. I don't want to see that. I find the score enchanting as it is.

re: Dear World Updated Version???

I have a copy of the original script and a copy of the early 1990's version.

Sad to say neither really work.

Add Herman's (lovely to listen too but overblown) score to the mix and you get concotion that just upsets your stomach.

Update:

Just found this review of a recent production.

What might actually work would be to have a modern day version of the story.. set in the metropolitan US.

I thought the latest version of the property was called THE SPRING OF NEXT YEAR. Why? Jerry Herman always hated the title tune and cut it from the re-write.

A friend of mine who was in the original production told me that the cast also hated the title song and parodied it backstage: "Please take an enema dear world..."
