It's fantastic. I have both volume I and II and I think they are great. I always find it interesting to hear songs in their initial state and it's always great to hear the composers singing them. This CD is no exception. My favorite would probably the rendition of Pretty Little Picture. So great.

Actually volume 2 is far more interesting than volume 1 as it covers mostly unknown items. And not bad ones I have to say.
Definitely a must have.

I've heard a recording of Mr Sondheim singing the complete lyrics to Happily Ever After that didn't make it on to either of these CDs, but it was absolutely superb.
His sardonic and biting interpretation made the song cut like a laser, in a way that I haven't heard in other recordings.

Scripps2 -- Where did you hear that? I would absolutely LOVE to hear him do that song.
(and by 'Happily Ever After, I'm assuming you mean the song that would become Being Alive, yes? Just making sure:) )

Yes - it was the song that became Being Alive. The only other recordings I know are the Larry Kert (incomplete) and Craig Lucas (not bitter enough) versions.
Apologies - I don't think I should say where I heard it - "discretion is the better part of valour" and all that - but the same person has a demo of the Bernstein/Sondheim "A Pray by Blecht" and copies of the very first sheetmusic published with "Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim". So they've got a good attic to raid!

Scripps, I believe I know what recording you're talking about. I've also heard 'Happily Ever After' from the promotional recording that was broadcast on the radio before Company opened. It's a really great song. Too bad scores aren't played before musicals arrive on broadway. We could at least get a taste of what they're like.
And to reply to the original question, I own the recording and it's marvelous! A must have!

I bought some songs from both volumes not too long ago on iTunes.
I adore them, it's so very beautiful to hear just Sondheim and his piano. Hearing the man who created these songs singing them makes me fall in love all over again. I will be buying the rest of the albums as soon as possible!
