Congrats to the writers & cast on a great review written by David Rooney of VARIETY! Here's a taste:

"Musical afficionados ...should be tickled by the endearingly silly self-reflexiveness of 'The Musical of Musicals" The Musical!'....this brassy pastiche and its cast of four vocally accomplished hams tell the same featherweight story five times...

[Rockwell and Bogart's] affection for and knowledge of the musical heavyweights' work clearly runs deep. The parodies often are as show-specific as they are ecumenical in skewering each composer's signature style, but the digs are subtle enough to keep the cognoscenti smiling and broad enough for occasional musical fans.

.....

Playing on a bare stage enhanced by minimal props and costume variations, the frothy, musically witty show is an economical vehicle that could be easily toured and adapted to fit most small venues.

Vocalizing capably in the broad range of styles required, the limber cast maintains a judicious lid on the material's natural push toward mugging, with Bogart the standout..."

Could anyone perhaps give give me a bit more information of this musical? My mom heard about it and wants to take me to see it. And she NEVER wants to take me to see a Broadway show because of my obsession but she seems to be quite interested so that makes me happy re: The Musical of Musicals: The Musical! Reviewed in VARIETY

To the first poster- thanks you for starting a thread of this because I wanted to make sure I wasn't going crazy...lol and also thank g-d for the search button! What was written in the first post was something about it (the musical) and embaressingly enough- I didn't understand a word of it. So, if you could please fill me in on the musical, that would be great. And yes, I know it is off Broadway at the moment. And, if you also know how long it's been out that would be good information to know as well as it seems to be quite new.
Thanks

People like you are the reason I'm on medication.

How nice of Variety to make no mention of director Pamela Hunt, whose astute direction made the whole darn thing work.

Here's the scoop RQp: The story line is: ingenue can't pay the rent; the villan says you have to pay the rent; the hero pays the rent.

The writers set this story line in 5 different ways, spoofing different composers/writer: Sondheim, Herman, Rogers & Hammerstein, Lloyd Webber and the 5th I momentarily forget.

I saw the first performance of the 1st song they wrote of this show at BMI Musical Theatre Workshop. It was a hit even then. Since that time, I've seen it as a 10 min. musical, a reading at the York, 3 full performances at the York & am getting set to see it some more at the Dodger. Terrific show!
