Ooohhhh, I like the Alfred Molina idea. That would be an interesting piece of casting. He'd probably do it very well. Did anyone see him on "Law & Order" recently with Angela Lansbury? He had a nicely creepy, amoral edge in that role.
Are you serious about Russell Crowe? Ugh, can't imagine it.

Imelda Staunton is her name. She will be absolutely perfect in the role.

Although I adore Toni Collette-I've been shilling her as a possible Evita for months now-she is way too young to do Mrs. Lovett correctly.

Someone made a point a few months back which I find very true: Len and George had to sing the score 8 times a week for countless months -- whoever ends up playing Sweeney will only have to sing the score once.

Only having to do it once doesn't teach you how to sing expressively, and that's my main worry with Crowe. As an actor, I think he's very well-suited to the role.

Hopefully they get great vocal coaches; singing in a rock band (30 Odd Foot of Grunts) has very little in common with something like Sweeney's "Johanna".

crowe did do some theater in australia, he played eddie and dr.scott in rocky horror. now although it doesn't really compare in any way to sondheim i think it could help a little more than being in a rock band to his favor

I liked the rumor of Kevin Kline and either Meryl Streep or Tracy Ullman.
Although I LOVE toni Collette, she seems a more obvious choice for a stage revival 10 years from now.

I LOVE the idea of Tracey Ullman for Lovett.

I think Russell Crowe has the look, but I too, am scared of his voice. The last thing we need is another Gerard Butler (not that we needed Butler in the first place).

Nothing's official yet. I'd put his casting above "rumor" but below "sure thing." Nothing's a sure thing until filming starts, and when an actor has a slate as full as Crowe's, I wouldn't count on much.

No of course nothing is ever official until the dotted line is signed. But it is safe to say that the film is moving forward primarily because of Crowe and Streep's interest. Rumors aside, I don't really think any other actors are at this time being seriously considered.

Molina is not the worst idea but...ah. Doesn't get my juices flowing. Can't think of anyone though.
