well, as some of you know: i'm back from ireland!! I just thought i'd post a little on the two new shows i saw (thats right NOT revivals but complete world premieres!)
We went to the Gaiety Theater in Dublin and saw the world Premiere of the new musical: The Wiremen, about bringing electricity to western ireland. it was a fascinating concept but the music was hit or miss, some songs had an overindulgent Andrew Lloyd Weber quality to them yet some were amazing, heartfelt and powerful.
The dancing was...well... Irish. Riverdance-esque without the pretentious costumes, flash/bang music and uniformality. Just people dancing, it looked normal.
The direction was seemless, especially in the opening scene with the entire company going about their daily lives on one small stage (think Studio 54 size)and in the tug of war scene.
The entire company did a good job singing and articulating unfortunatly the talented Rory Nolan got stuck with some pretty bad material as the one hold out to electricity. his one big number is a low brow, over indulgent piece of crap and while my grandfather cried, i laughed. The set is amazing, its a stage covered in what is grass, a hill towards the back, tree's and shrubs litter the stage and throughout the show the controversial electricity poles pop up slowly until the once tranquil and peaceful west irisih city is covered with the poles. All in all the show often surges with emense power but at times its like a blackout. I couldn't find a CD

We than moved on to the Abbey theatres world premiere of A Cry from Heaven ( i made the logo my self! ) based on an old irish myth about love, greed, power etc... set in mid-evil Ulster. Oliver Py does a splendid job directing the thin, sometimes ridiculous play (we saw the first preview). Its creative and keeps you hooked, even if the play isnt that good. The cast works very hard and delivers, they get the desired mood whenever they want. If its supposed to be haunting, Oliver's directing and the talented young cast gives you just that.
The set is amazing, three different large blocks with a intricate wiring of cat walks in the back are moved around to create sets along with things that the company who doubles as actors in the show roll in.
I can't really put a finger on the what i loved in the production. I think the actors and the physical production. They had water pipes all over the top of the stage so it "rained" heavily and constantly adding to the bleak prospect of the outcome.
If you're a fan of nudity look no further. There's enough male nudity (mainly frontal) to fill the page of a gay porn website, along with a tiny bit of female frontal nudity. There are numerous sex scenes but they are so ridiculous (everyone fully clother and it just looks ridiculous) that you feel sorry for the extremly talented cast. you get your first taste of frontal male nudity within the first fifteen minutes when two men strip and fight. yeah. i know.
Olwen Fouéré stands out as the true villiam: Ness. and if you enjoy a hunk of a man( i dont but w/e ) than you'll enjoy the almost constantly nude love interest Alan Turkington who plays Naoise (pronounced Nee-sha).
Well, all in all, this production also has its highlights but the actual play is weak and the second act is WAY to long. The play looks amazing on the stage and is worth the visit just to see Mr Py's direction and the splendid sets by Pierre-Andre Weitz.
the lead female: Deirdre (played by Kelly Campbell) gives a Olivier Award Winning Preformance as the innocent and love struck Deirdre who runs away from the powerful king. Her preformance is powerful, heartfelt and amazingly brutal and honest. She delivers one of the best preformances i have ever seen on the stage.
Well there you have it, my theater trips in ireland all summed up. hope you enjoyed reading it!

here's a weird question for you: were there any really thick Irish accents, so thick you couldn't understand?
sorry, I have a fetish with Irish and Scottish accents....

Posted: 6/10/05 at 9:54pmyes, i think british/irish accents are hot also...lol...during the musical the dialouge was spoken very quickly so you couldn't really understand what they were saying, but in the play they didn't sound irish at all. though they were.
