From their website:
"Dear Fellow Employees and Costco Members:
Hurricane Katrina has created the most catastrophic disaster in the history of our nation. The extent of the suffering and misery in Louisiana and Mississippi is devastating to all of us as we read and watch events unfold. We all grieve for our fellow countrymen, women and children.
Many agencies and branches of government are working furiously to help restore safety and to meet the needs of the survivors and the displaced. I’m sure that each of us has an impulse to help in some way. We have been told that the most immediate need is for financial resources, so that the organizations on the ground can administer proper aid by providing the basics of food, water, shelter, clothing and medical care. The best thing we can do to assist these organizations is to give generously to their efforts. These organizations include the American Red Cross, United Way, Salvation Army, Northwest Medical teams, and other relief organizations.
Costco has made a $1,000,000.00 contribution pledge to the American Red Cross and, as you know, we are accepting donations from our members in all of our Costco facilities around the world. All monies raised will be channeled to the American Red Cross. As of this morning, $1,504,000.00 has been raised through Costco warehouses, thanks to the generosity of our members and employees. Additionally, we are making contributions of food, water and supplies provided by both Costco and our suppliers, and we are allocating space for the Red Cross to set-up command centers in some of our facilities that are closest to the disaster center.
Unfortunately, it appears that the magnitude of this disaster will continue to grow in the next few weeks and that recovery will require billions of dollars, enormous relief work by agencies, and the generosity of the entire nation to help our fellow Americans. I know that we can count on our entire Costco family to help.
Thank you.
Jim Sinegal"
Even Wal-Mart has stepped up with millions in donations.
