Lotsa great and interesting points. I do disagree with whoever said JCS became far more famous as a stage musical than as a record--remember the album was a MASSIVE surprise success (particularly in the US) that led to tons of big concert and tour concert versions before the musica, and I still see the concept album pop up in collections of people who would never own a musical cast album.

It also should be pointed out that the original French recording DOES sound more rock, albeit I'm still not sure I'd classify it as such. (I've always wished I could find out more about the original French staging--I believe it was done as a series of "tableaux vivants" I read somewhere, without clear connecting scenes, with the belief people knew the story more or less. At any rate it's a fascinating listen with, at least, far better lyrics lol).

Pop-opera makes the most sense to me, I guess.
