^^^That actually makes sense to me. As I've said before, I worked on the show with Lauren Bacall in stock. It really made no sense that Ruth Sherwood was coming to New York to "make it" in her 50s, but age aside, Bacall was excellent in the part.

Cloris Leachman actually makes more sense to me.

(Note: I have worked with Channing as well and I do realize the outsized personality is partially an act. But it isn't entirely and her ingratiating demeanor seems the opposite of Ruth Sherwood to me.)
