https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2T_S2FZYWL8 Dave Malloy announced in this video that GREAT COMET will have its West Coast premiere in Spring 2021 with ShotgunPlayers in Berkeley. This means that COMET will be in the same season & city as the previously announced OCTET tryout.
Obviously this is all very hypothetical given the current climate, but I'll be optimistic. The impression I got from Malloy's video was "we're doing this regardless, and we're hoping it can be next year" so even if it has to be postponed, I'm sure that the show will still happen.

I've somehow never been to Shotgun Players before, but it's a teeny tiny theater. I suspect this will be a very Ars Nova-esque production - I'm excited!!!
I have walked or driven past the theater many times but never have been inside. It's 120 seats. While I watched the Shotgun Players' performance Beardo online, that's as close as I've come. I don't know if or how they'll reconfigure the place for Great Comet.
Dave Malloy is obviously loyal to his roots, and it seems like he's trying to perform the show in the sort of small venue where it started at Ars Nova.
Once again, wait and see on anything scheduled less than a year from now. But if and when it happens, the demand will be very high given the size of the venue.
Just so everyone know, Shotgun Players is the name of the company, while Ashby Stage is the name of the venue in which they usually perform. But I've seen a couple of other shows at that venue over the years that weren't from Shotgun Players. It's a great little space. Very intimate, with a lot of character. It reminds me a bit of the Connelly Theatre here in NYC.
No news yet on the director, it would seem. I'm guessing it won't be Chavkin, because I think it's more likely that this will be more of a local, in-home team of artists.
Reviving this year old thread to say that Comet tickets are now on sale on the Shotgun Players website! It was initially slotted for Spring 2021, which obviously did not happen, and is now running in late fall/early winter 2022. Tickets are VERY affordable. I feel a bit weird buying tickets so far in advance, for a show on a completely different coast, but I'm sure it'll be worth it.
Thanks for the heads up - got tickets for the first preview! (Which is...over a year away, but it's nice to look forward to happy things in the future)
So glad to have seen this! Went ahead and grabbed a couple tickets since they were so affordable. Already quite a few seats had sold from when I was looking last night to when I bought them this afternoon after discussing dates. Can’t wait to see what they do with the staging and see where my seats will actually be when all is said and done.
