Does anyone have a suggestion on a nice, pretty cheap hotel in Midtown? What are some hotels you have stayed at?
this needs a little more definition...
When are you planning on coming?
What is your defintion of "cheap"?
How many people in the room?

I am sorry.
The end of March.
A reasonable price for the city/Midtown.

Days Inn at 48th and .. something is nice and affordable. It's right in the heart of Midtown.
there are a host of great hotels on 44th between 5th and 6th -- and at times you will be surprised at some good rates that come up -- some of my favorites:
The Algonquin
The Iroquise
The Sofitel
The Mansfield

I would consider John's a reasonable price. I am going with my dad...I am not interested in the romantic feel. I just need a place to sleep.
If the focus is "cheap", I would recommend Comfort Inn or Super 8 Times Square, both on 46th, to the east of Times Square and to the west of 5th Ave. Very, very cheap and nicer than the usual Comfort Inn or Super 8. When I was in NYC in April, I was able to get a Super 8 room for under $120/night, and there's a free continental breakfast and internet access past the lobby.
the sheraton is nice and only about $175 a night...

I can get the info for you for this nifty little bed and breakfast on... 53rd, I believe between 8th and 9th. It's really clean and cute... and kind of more word of mouth... this couple owns the whole building and there's a dance floor upstairs and a kitchen and lounge area... they also offer dance lessons (ballroom, salsa, tango, etc.). I used to stay there all the time when I was in high school... it's only like $60 a night and it's like your own little apartment for the weekend. It's a sweet deal. I mean, not the Plaza, but it's nice and in the ideal location. :)

The Time on 49th and Broadway. No idea how much it cost, but it was the cheapest out of all the hotels I've stayed at in NYC, and I liked it the best. I've stayed at The Plaza, The Waldorf, and The Muse too. I guess cheapest doesn't mean much when comparing it to those, though. Fantastic little hotel and I even had a celebrity sighting whilst checking out (Ben Harper).
How was The Muse? It looked very lovely from the website!

The Muse was a great hotel, huge bathrooms. The only thing was, the block was basically the hotel, and fake designer bag stands. It was annoying to get hassled and hit on by guys wanting you to buy the bags every time you go back to the hotel.
I would recommend The Time over it however, because you get basically the same thing for about a hundred dollars cheaper, and you don't get hassled by those guys.

If you really want cheap in Times Square, the best deal is the Portland Square, on 47th between 6th and 7th. Small but clean rooms for about $100. No fancy lobby or services, but safe and convenient.
Some places to check for information:
NYC and company
www.nycvisit.com
Nyctourist.com
The NYC and company visitor center has everything you will need to know.
Have a great trip.
You should also check out Hotels.com, my brother got a room at the Waldorf for 100 a night and it is with in walking distance of the theater district.
