SEATTLE - An arrest is sending shockwaves through the halls of local political power.

Larry Corrigan has worked on a number of Republican campaigns, but now he's in jail after he was caught in an Internet sting, accused of trying to solicit sex from young girls.

Corrigan's orange jail uniform he was wearing in court Thursday is a far cry from the business suit he wore at the King County Prosecutor's Office for 25 years.

Until last year, Corrigan was the Director of Operations and Budget. Now he's suspected of attempted child rape and communicating with a minor for sex.

"The suspect was communicating online with someone whom he believed was a 13 year old girl." said Debra Brown with the Seattle Police Department. "In fact, that person was a detective from our Internet Crimes Against Children unit."

Seattle police say Corrigan used the AOL screen name LCOR102 to chat with the fictitious 13-year-old girl. Court documents say he bragged he'd already "had sex with a 14-year-old girl from Kansas."

Police say LCOR102 eventually switched to the screen name Palisade199. Detectives say he told the 13 year old he was in his 50's and asked her to meet and perform a very specific sex act.

Police say Corrigan also sent the fictitious girl e-mails that contained pornographic images of the kind of sex he wanted to have.

Court documents say on Wednesday, Corrigan showed up at a Capitol Hill video store to meet the fictitious girl. Instead, police threw him in jail. They also searched his Magnolia home and seized his computer.

News of Corrigan's arrest swept through the corridors of Republican power in King County. Sources describe him as a longtime political operative; a former right hand man to King County Prosecutor Norm Maleng.

Sources say Corrigan also worked on previous sheriff's campaigns for now-Congressman Dave Reichert.

Now, Corrigan finds himself snared in an Internet police sting aimed at online predators.

"We're out there aggressively looking for these guys," Brown said. "And unfortunately, this gentleman was caught."

The judge ruled Thursday evening that Corrigan would be allowed to go home without posting bail.

Meanwhile, the King County prosecutor's office issued a statement expressing shock over Corrigan's arrest. One of his co-workers declined an on-camera interview, but said "this is not the Larry" she knows.

Because Corrigan is a former employee, the King County prosecutor's office is asking the state attorney general's office to handle the case.

wosq, that's not gonna stop any of them. nor is it a revelation. back a hundred years ago when i was on aol the joke was that the reason you don't meet girls that you chat with in chat rooms is that they can't convince their wives to let them go out. honestly, the truth about the internet (as with life) has almost always been that if it seems too good to be true, it is. so if you're looking for a 20-something, lithe blonde beauty with an inordinately large chest and you find one, the chances are it was actually a 43 year old overweight balding man named herschell who lives in his mother's basement. conversely, if you were looking for a well hung twink in bed-stuy and found one, chances are he was actually a needle-dicked poorly preserved leather queen in biloxi. anyone who goes online looking for someone to love is asking for disappointment at the very least and jail or death at the most.

that said, how f*cking stupid are these morons who continue to chase underaged kids online? I mean i understand that they are sick, but are they really complete idiots too?

Hmmm... almost sounds like you get kid gloves (pardon the expression) when you are a White Straight Male Repbulican in political power...

walkon, i'd go out on a limb and say that he meant, "unfortunately for him." i know a lotta cops and have yet to meet a single one who had any sympathy for a pedophile. many of them are proponents of the "bowling ball treatment" as punishment for pedophiles.

papalovesmambo, you are probably correct on that...but the ambigious use of the work "unfortunately" coupled with "gentleman" makes the arresting officer sound strangely tactfull and well mannered.

I really start wonder if Larry Corrigan will get the same contempteous treatment others in the same situation would get.

on the gentleman part, cops are like marines. a marine would call a lamp post sir and a cop would call one "the gentleman." we can't hear whether his enunciation was actually saying "assh*le."

but i don't really see that anyone'll be rallying around this guy no matter what unless he knows where some major bodies are buried. i mean the old adage in politics is the two things you can't be caught in bed with are a dead girl or a live boy, but when the girl is 13, forget about it.

Incidentally, there is also a relatively large skin-head, neo-nazi sub-culture in Seattle.

It took me a while to figure out what papalovesmambo was saying and I understand now.

When I asked Suprising, huh? I meant that it is surprising to think that Seattle would have such problems. The stereotypical perception is of a city filled with hippy leftovers wearing tie-dyed shirts, eating granola and drinking Starbucks lattes.

I meant no connection between Republicans and neo-nazis.

Frankly, I'm surprised papalovesmambo couldn't read the actual intentions of my statement. He seems to have no problem reading the intended statement of the officer even if differs from what he "actually" said.
