Posted: 5/14/05 at 10:11pmWe are a group of teenagers getting the rights to Children Of Eden from MTI and putting it on ourselves. We have a few questions: a) is it absolutely necessary to have YOUNG Cain and YOUNG Abel? b) Where do the characters of Aphrah and Aysha come in? Who are they? c) We have a pretty low budget. How is the ark done normally?

To answer the youngsters question: you might be able to accomplish the impression of little kids with two of your ensemble members playing the children.
As for the ark, I think you can be absolutely creative about it and find an inventive and cute way to do the ark boarding sequence.

In my school production we didn't have any little kids, so we got two of our smallest girls to be Young Cain and Young Abel. It actually worked pretty well. They could do the singing parts in "Close to Home" in the right octave, whereas a teenage boy's voice has changed.
Aphra and Aysha come in in the second act, and are the wives of Ham and Seth. They aren't very big roles, but they are essential to the "family" harmonies in the songs.
Also in my production the ark was on the other side of some rocks from the first act. When we turned it around, it looked like the front of a ship. So it consolidated the amount of sets. It also made it easy to get on the ship, because the rocks on the other side made stairs.
