re: Come Look at the Freaks!

Oh man, someone hit on doing this show as a concert! I wonder if Seth would ever consider it for one of the Actors' Fund concerts. Please Seth! Please!

Absolutely Love this show.....it helps that I have a twin sister so we sing every song together! The harmonies of Emily Skinner and Alice Ripley are phenomenal and don't even get me started on Norm Lewis.....he is good beyond words. I was really excited when I went to see a local show a little while ago, but it was awful. All the sets were cardboard. Just wondering why it didn't last too long. I know it has a few problems, but there have definately been other shows which have done better and still had a strange subject (Urinetown). Is Urinetown more acceptable than Sideshow?

Admittedly, I enjoy this show for the most part. Still, let's be real folks: how much more heavy-handed can you get than having Siamese twins sing, "I will never Leave you. I will never go away"...
Very, very bad.

I've got to agree. I think it's a great show, and a good cast recording, but I've heard better. I definitely enjoy it, but it's nothing to waller over for me.

re: Come Look at the Freaks!

One of my favorite shows - saw it 5 times during its very brief run. A lot of people complain that high quality, truly original musicals are so rare these days - well, Side Show is a shining example of that rare thing. What a shame that it didn't find its audience. I have a feeling that the public perception was that it would be a sad show about exploited freaks, but it's so much more. It examines the inner lives of Violet and Daisy - their dreams and fears, and their public persona versus their private longings. Besides being so poignant, the show was also funny and heartwarming. The strong bond between the sisters was completely believable in songs like "Feelings You've Got to Hide." And this is the show that introduced me to Norm Lewis. What a glorious voice! "You Should Be Loved" is a classic. I would love to see this show back on Broadway or maybe performed at a good regional theater, like the Papermill. But Alice and Emily will be hard acts to follow.

I was fortunate enough to see a performance soon after opening from the front orchestra, and was totally blown away.
Do any of you recall when they did a number for the Macys Thanksgiving Parade, the Nile number...the girls came apart briefly but covered well. Actually, I thought that was pretty funney and have watched the videotape several times.

Sort of OT...in their later years and up to their deaths, Daisy and Violet Hilton lived and worked in Charlotte, NC. My father grew up in Charlotte and the twins worked at the grocery store he and his family went to. A few years ago when the show was on Broadway he told that he never would have thought that a musical would be written about the elderly siamese twins that used to bag his groceries!
