Hairspray is LOVE.
Someday... I will be Penny, I swear. That's the one role on B'Way right now I'd die to play (though I'd be forever paranoid that I wasn't quite as funny as Tracy Miller. She's friggin adorable).
I went into this show with the worst possible attitude...I was convinced I wasn't going to like it. I came out loving this show. It's mindless entertainment, but I think there is always room for an old-fashioned musical (even though "Hairspray" does not have a "typical" Broadway score, I think it follows the format of an old-fashioned musical.)My favorites in the show were Julie Halston and Tracy Miller...both of them are hysterical!
*huggles Link doll* The only thing better than Hairspray is...Hairspray!
I felt the same way as Ruth Sherwood---thinking I would hate it. I only went because someone gave me the tickets. Since then, have seen it a dozen times, loving it more all the time. I just leave there feeling GREAT every time.
I'm beyond sad that Chester Gregory's (Seaweed in the show) last show is this coming Sunday--he is phenomenal! While I'm sure he'll be a smash in Tarzan, he will definitely be missed in Hairspray!
Did anyone get a chance to see Jackie Seiden go on as Amber on Broadway? I would love to hear how she did..
Does anyone know if Julie Halston is still in "Hairspray"? She's still listed on the web site, but an article on Playbill.com called her "Julie Halston, recently of "Hairspray."
She was still in it as of the Thursday before Thanksgiving. I'm seeing it again Sunday and will let you know. She is hilarious!

If it is not too much trouble, do you think you could find out if Jackie Seiden is still in the show? Originally she told me she was set to leave December 1st, but I'm not sure if she decided to stay.
No trouble at all! I'll report back Sunday night
Thanks Yankeegal! Have fun at the show!
ALWAYS!!
Thanks Ruth Sherwood.

Another Hairspray lover here. I'm seeing the tour in January in Louisville. I've seen it on Broadway twice. I've never been such a huge fan of a musical before, like seeing it multiple times and such. But I loved the movie version of Hairspray back in the day. I would love to be a part of this production as one of The Dynamites. Or Motormouth in 20 years when they do a revival, lol.

Sorry (who is that... Amanda? Taylor? :P), Jackie's gone. I saw the show on Sunday, and she wasn't there.
And I DID see her go on for Becky once. She did just fine! :)

I love Hairspray!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I've seen it 11 times.
Just wanted to chime in with my love for Hairspray as well. I've seen it 6 times on Broadway (4 times in the last two months) and I enjoy it more each time. The current lotto is making it incredibly inexpensive (and easy!) to see. I like what someone posted earlier; this show is truly my "happy pill". When I've had a bad week, all I need is Hairspray to raise my spirits. And the bass coming from the pit in the front row rocks!
And I'll throw in some Tracy Miller love too. She's hysterical and too cute!

Oh, damn! Thanks for the info, although I wish she would have stayed more than a couple of months. Last time I talked to her, she was moving to a tour of..something (I forget), though, so I don't think I have seen the last of her.
Hi Ruth Sherwood--As promised, reporting back and YES Julie Halston is still in the show, as hilarious as ever!

was anyone else at chester's teary farewell performance?
LOL--I did, and now that I see who you are, I am LMAO. I have a picture of you from last night--with my daughter and a Hairspray ensemble member to remain nameless LOL!! Nice to hear from you.
Oh and yes, Chester's performance yesterday--FANTASTIC (even more than usual), and every person in that theater saw an incredible performance(again, even more than usual). He is amazing!
last night was quite the emotional show! Tears were seen from every single person on stage, especially during "I Know Where I've Been" - Chestor was openly weeping. From that point till the end of the show, there were lots of tears. But he gave such a fantastic performance! I'm glad I didn't miss it.
I've never seen anything like it! Yes, they ALL cried, and Chester sobbed. The emotion was amazing. The cheers every time Chester delivered a line, the extra hugs, glances, and pats on the back, the ad lib by Julie Halston calling Seaweed/Chester "multitalented" and the one by Andrew Rannells after "Run and Tell That" to Chester "You're fantastic" (words to that effect). I wonder what people who have never seen the show before thought it was all about?

Just adding to the Hairspray love. I love all the songs, and how the entire show is upbeat for the most part. "You can't stop the beat!" :)
Becky is an EXCELLENT Amber... we were gushing about here back a few pages.... definitely one of the best in the role
