Congratulations to Marc Shaiman regarding the new Hairspray film.
I can't wait to see it.
Hope they use William Ivey Long, Kerry Butler and Brier.
And of course Harvey! Oh, and of course the one and only Mary Bond Davis and Jackie Hoffman.
They need to be in the film. Love them.

Kerry was robbed. But if Jackie Hoffman is not in that film I am not going!
Did you see her as that gym coach. She had me in stitches. She was also the funniest person in the Tribeca theater festival.
LOVE HOFFMAN.

Since we are talking about Ms. Hoffman I thought it was a good time for people to see this again or for people who have not seen it to see it for the first time:

Posted: 12/18/04 at 2:37pmI'm pretty sure they're using most of the original cast in the movie. At least Harvey and Marissa Jaret Winokur. And I believe the movie is being co-directed by Jack O'Brien and Jerry Mitchell, but don't take my word for it.

Because I was at a rehersal the other day and my director asked me to go hand Danny a costume and I was like "WHO the HELL is Danny?!?!" and everyone bakstage is like "The director of Hairspray, duh!" and im like "Where the Hell am I going to find him?!?" ok, turns out he was in the Orchestra pit but it was really weird. very random.

No casting yet (thanks Craig), but I seem to remember reading that the OBC was not going to be used (except Harvey). I'll see if I can find the article (or thread, I can't even remember what it was), but in the meantime, don't hold me to it! lol
EDIT: I was mistaken, I originally mis-read the line above the ad on this article

From Broadway.com article:
"No stars have been named for the film, although New Line honcho Michael Lynne previously told Variety that the notion of hiring stage stars Harvey Fierstein and Marissa Jaret Winokur (who both won Tonys for their work in the show) to recreate their roles was, 'not out of the question.' "
And then Playbill.com wrote, "The paper [Variety] speculated that Marissa Jaret Winokur would bring her Tony-winning performance as portly Tracy Turnblad to the screen. She has ties to New Line with another project."
I think it would be smart to use them, especially since Marissa is doing One Upon A Matress with Carol Burnett, and she's got a sitcom and movie in the works, and Harvey will bring in the cult/John Waters audience.

Marissa is not involved with the Kathleen Marshall "Once Upon a Mattress" tv film. The principal cast is as follows:
Carol Burnett .... Queen Aggravain
Tracey Ullman .... Princess Winnifred
Denis O'Hare .... Prince Dauntless
Zooey Deschanel .... Lady Larken
Matthew Morrison .... Sir Harry
Michael Boatman .... The Jester
Tom Smothers .... King Sextimus
Edward Hibbert .... The Wizard
Michelle Harrison .... Princess #12

I love Marissa but after seeing Brier in several things I think she has the best voice.

Posted: 12/20/04 at 7:52pmI really enjoyed Vanessa Oliverez as Tracy-she was fantastically funny and had the perfect voice for the role!

Posted: 12/20/04 at 10:31pmAlthough I did not see her, I liked Vanessa's (from Am. Idol) energy for "Tracy." She was a great singer, as well.
