Inexpensive Hotels In NYC?

I know there aren't any good inexpensive hotels in NYC, however, I do know there are some package deals with shows/rooms, yes?
I am going to see WICKED January 16 (Fri) and will also see one other show, probably either URINETOWN or LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS.
We are a family of four and will need to stay only one night.
What would a frequent NYC vacationee recommend?

It's not a package deal, but for a family I might recommend the Skyline in Hell's Kitchen. The service is only so-so (my friends and I joke about the doormen who never open the door) but the rooms are clean and quite spacious by NYC standards. Prices are very reasonable (even for a suite) and you have only a two-to-three-block walk to the theatres. I think it is a very convenient location for theatre trips and I love the neighborhood -- full of deli's and restaurants.
Guys, would anyone agree about the Skyline?
The website is http://www.1skyline.com.
Broadway.com offers show/room packages, and hotels like the Doubletree Suites and the Marriott Marquis, both in Times Square, used to offer show/room deals. Worth checking into, but I think you are getting into some serious money with these.

I would also recommend the Skyline. I stayed there once and found it to be clean, teh rooms are a good size and it's comfortable.
The Milford Plaza sometimes has special rates at certain times of the year. Nice hotel but the rooms are very small. If you plan to the cot thing in the room for the kids, it will never work there.

I would try to price compare on hotels.com. Admittedly, you will pay more for four people, but you should be able to get a hotel within Times Square for under $200. Also, check the hotel's website because often you can get a cheaper rate than what you'll find on hotels.com

Posted: 11/8/03 at 6:48pmThe Howard Johnson's on 8th and 51st is not bad at all, and quite cheap. I stayed there for a few nights with some friends this summer and we had found it to work out perfectly for us. Clean rooms, spacious (they fit up to six, we found out!) and, for you, VERY close to Wicked! I think we paid $105 a night, in July. I was pretty pleased.

This is a bit off topic, but is booking through http://www.new-york-hotels-reservations.net ok (secure and such)? I'm going to try and stay at Milford Plaza in February, and I've gotten three different quotes from three hotel sites (expedia.com, hotels.com and that one), new-york-hotels-reservations being the cheapest.
Any ideas?

Posted: 11/8/03 at 11:09pmI, too, have stayed at the Skyline. It's a rather small hotel, floor-wise, but the rooms are indeed quite spacious and clean. You can get room service pretty quickly (I got an iron within five minutes) and it probably is one of the best bangs for your buck (if not THE best bang).

Posted: 11/9/03 at 6:57amThere is one on 47 th Street ( around the corner from the Palace), called the Portland Square. The rooms are small & plain but you cannot beat it for cost & location. If all you are looking for is a bed & shower( & in NYC what else would you want)this is the place for those on a tight budget.

Posted: 11/9/03 at 11:08amDowntown is a good value on weekends, andf the neighborhood i9s quiet. We usually stay at the Millenium Hilton (4 stars, always excellent) for less than I could book in or around the theater district. I never miss stoping at Century 21 for good bargains and the pool is a huge hit with my kid. We go uptown via subway.

I always stay at the Edison Hotel on Broadway and 47th. Its right in the heart of Times Square so its very convenient and cheap (but very clean).
Enjoy your trip!

Thank you all for your help! IF we can get a room for $99 a night, then we shall stay two nights instead of one!
I have eaten at the Edison Hotel once, good food, and cheap. I'll search for their Site...

I just got home from my weekend stay at The Edison, my 4th stay there in the past 2 years. The rooms are small, just as The Milford Plaza, but their sevice is tops and I like their coffee
shop and piano bar. Another good choice nearby is Best Western President.
Unfortunatly, prices have come up significantly recently in Midtown, and when I checked to see if they came down last week, no such luck, in fact just about everyplace was booked solid. On the other hand, January is one of the slowest times of the year for NY tourism, so maybe you can get a better deal. Just bundle up.
PS. We saw Wicked too and it was great.

Posted: 11/10/03 at 2:55pmI just got back from 4 days at the Super 8 near Times Square (46/6th) when I was in town to see Wicked and a few other shows (one that I almost walked out on, but I digress). It was decently priced for this time of year ($139)and is in a good location (and is also clean).

Posted: 11/10/03 at 3:15pmIn January, you can get a very good hotel, likely for no more than $100 - - I'm talking Hilton, Sheraton and the like. The way to do it is Priceline. I've posted long e-mails before (on our previous site) about how to go about doing it, the strategy, and if you want to know more, post another message and I'll explain the process. I've had very good luck with Priceline, even though I don't like all of their policies (and I'd never use them for airlines). But for hotels in NYC, it is the way to go. The most I have ever paid on Priceline is $145, and that was this fall. I got a room at the Grand Hyatt. I've paid as little as $85 for rooms at Hiltons, the Novotel and similar properties, all listed as 3-star or 4-star on Priceline. (I should say those very low prices were close to post-Sept. 11). But generally I pay $100-$125 for rooms. Trust me, you will pay less for a really good hotel by using Priceline than you will for a moderate, or even a bad, hotel via other internet sites. I have used those sites or even booked through hotels directly when I've wanted to stay somewhere specific, but most of the time I rely on Priceline.
