re: January=Month of Shows

I just did the math. By the end of the month, I will have seen 8 BIC shows. Wicked, Grease, Spamalot, Xanadu x2, and Jersey Boys x3. Yikes.

re: January=Month of Shows

haha that rocks! I've got Xanadu (x2 after next time), Jersey Boys (x.....2? I think just 2 lol), Wicked, and Spamalot, plus (hopefully) Desire Under the Elms and whatever I'm seeing with my Theater in Chicago class tomorrow (our prof. keeps it a secret until the night of the show---fun, yet also not haha). I can't wait until tomorrow/Friday/Saturday/Sunday!

I would not enjoy secret theater. You'll have to let us know what it ended up being.

The Secret

Rather than starting a new thread...

Theater in Chicago, class 1: "Topdog/Underdog" at the American Theater Company. The show is about 2 African-American brothers and takes place all in one apartment; the brothers are the only two characters who appear in the play. The company is doing something interesting and presenting this show along with one other (whose name I can't remember) every other night (I think). There are 2 brothers in the other show, too, who are played by the same 2 actors. The twist, however, is that they have 2 actors assigned to each "brother" role; 2 are African American, and 2 are white, and will be switching off performances of each play. I would actually be interested to go back and see a different cast becuase given the play's subject matter it seems like the choice of actors would definitely influence the message of the show. Also interesting to note is that both shows are performed in the round, and the theater is quite small (maybe 50 seats?).

This was their first night of previews and the show was pretty good. I was confused by some of the dialogue, I don't like to be kept in the dark and didn't quite understand what was going on at many parts. Basically the younger brother (named Booth) lives in an apartment, he has no job and is trying to learn how to "hustle" cards (3 cards, one black 2 red and mixes them up kind of like a magician and you have to pick the black one to win) to make some money. His brother, (named Lincoln) is staying with Booth and working as fake Abraham Lincoln in an arcade game where tourists get to shoot/assassinate him. Lincoln is divorced from his wife, Cookie (who we never see) and it is repeatedly stated that he doesn't touch the cards anymore, meaning he used to live a street life but is trying to hold down this steady job.

The relationship between the brothers as well as their socio-economic circumstances is explored as the play goes on, and the cards show up repeatedly. The actors gave amazing performances, imo, and did a great job becoming their characters. I was totally convinced by their performances. However, the dialogue itself was confusing, and even though things were revealed I was still left with many questions about each brother as well as their background(s)/childhood(s). Some of their actions also seemed to come out of nowhere. The set was minimal, and the lighting design was good, especially one part where a sunrise was depicted. Overall a good show, it was very different than what I usually see, I didn't LOVE it but also did not hate it.

...and sorry this is long haha I'm planning on referring back to this post when I write my assignment tomorrow!
