Last week, sitting in the front row of Studio 54 in New York, watching 'Sondheim On Sondheim', I felt as though I'd died and gone to musical theatre heaven.
Tonight, sitting in the front row of the Menier Chocolate Factory in London, watching 'Paradise Found', I felt as though I'd died and gone to musical theatre hell!
I've seen a lot of shows but can't think of a stinker as big as this and especially one that, on paper at least, looked like a sure-fire winner. It just goes to show, that William Goldman's quote about the movie business equally applies to theatre -"No-one knows anything".
Also Tiggs, I would have welcomed a stuffy atmosphere compared to the horrendously loud portable air conditioning unit that was blaring and clunking away in the corner - it didn't stop M Patinkin from pouring sweat from his bald bonce, however.
I'm almost tempted to catch 'The Fantasticks' now!
