re: Spamalot in London?

"The London production hasn't been cast yet - although Simon Russell Beale, the award winning actor, has taken over from Tim Curry as King Arthur. Mr Curry is keen to open in London, but it could be Russell Beale playing Arthur at the Palace." (excerpt from The Daily Mail article, as provided by link above)

What would bother me more than Tim Curry's not appearing in the West End Production would be that he really wanted the role and lost it to another actor. I think he deserves to be cast in the London production--he helped establish the immense popularity of this musical on Broadway. Would Russell Beale have had the same following initially on Broadway and brought in as many ticket sales as Mr. Curry?

I think we (but particularly the UK fans) should start lobbying our choice of Tim Curry as the King with Eric Idle and Mike Nichols, before it's too late. I'm willing to write letters, as I had planned some day to write letters of thanks to these gentlemen for casting Tim in the Broadway role anyway. Does anyone have any useful addresses for these two creative geniuses?

re: Spamalot in London?

I would imagine both Mr. Idle and Mr. Nichols could be reached via the Shubert Theatre...I don't have the address handy, but it's certainly readily accessible. It's probably pretty late in the day to attempt a letter-writing campaign, casting decision-wise, but I s'pose it couldn't hurt. re: Spamalot in London?

At this point, I still have hope that Hank Azaria knows what he's talking about - he didn't mention Tim going to London just to a fan at the stage door, he said something along those lines during that public panel discussion sponsored by the NY Times. I can't believe that if SRB were a sure thing - or even an almost sure thing - that Hank would be unaware of it. Maybe I'll be proven wrong, but hopefully not...

re: Spamalot in London?

Now even Broadway world is mentioning Beale's name. *sigh*

As others have said, I hope that it isnt a case of Tim wanting to do the show but being told he cant...words can not describe how awful that would be.

re: Spamalot in London?

I think Roger Allam would be a good King Arthur. Similar style of voice to Curry too.

re: Spamalot in London?

Just seen a link to the New York Post on the Broadway board that seems to be under the impression Beale has got it sewn up...

Yes, they do make it sound like the decision has been made. Wow, kinda depressing...if it's true.

re: Spamalot in London?

If it is true - as, more and more, it appears to be - I will be verrrrry slow to forgive Hank Azaria for opening his mouth. re: Spamalot in London?

EDIT: Yup, it's true...and what I'd give anything to know is if Tim was ever approached at all, or if Simon was cast in the Broadway production with the thought from the start that he'd be the one to open the show in London. That thought depresses me more than I can say.

re: Spamalot in London?

Until there's official word on www.montypythonsspamalot.com, I'm reluctant to give up hope for Tim Curry in the role of Arthur in London. However, with Simon Russell Beale's apparent successful replacement of Curry in the role on Broadway and his recent numerous and highly praised stage performances in London, he might be the better choice for the financial success of the London production, as he could bring a larger draw to the theatre. (Although, it is highly possible that even if this new information is correct, Tim Curry was offered the London role and declined it, for his own reasons.)

In fact, Clive Barnes's article in the Post (linked above on this thread) is so complimentary of the current cast's performance on Broadway, it makes me want to see it again, if I could get to New York again before the cast changes.

re: Spamalot in London?

Press release...where's a press release? That's really the only way to end all this speculation. I see that so far the NY Post is the only source for this casting news.

Someone just left feedback to the BWW story which cited the Post, claiming it can't be true because SRB is already committed to performing at the National Theatre in the fall. Does anyone have any idea if that's the case?

re: Spamalot in London?

I dont know if anyboady has already asked this but does anybody know when SRB is leaving spamlot?

re: Spamalot in London?

Someone posting on the musicals forum at whatsonstage.com - who is, I see from other notes, "in the business" in some capacity and has apparently been fairly accurate in the past - claims that "Eddie Izzard will be leading the UK Spamalot cast." While not specifically mentioning a role, the wording would seem to indicate Eddie will be playing Arthur (although the note is included in a thread relating to a rumor in another thread that David Hyde Pierce would be playing Sir Robin...yeah, sure).

Just to confuse things even further...

re: Spamalot in London?

re: Spamalot in London?

You tend to *sound* like you know what you're talking about Ryan - so tell us wont you - does it look like Tim Curry is well out of the running for the show nowadays?

re: Spamalot in London?

For what it's worth, group sales tickets for Wicked are already on sale, and that cast list isn't supposed to be announced until mid-May. So I guess it's at least possible that tickets will go on sale before the cast is announced.

I read that there's a press launch for Spamalot on the "magic date" of 2/21, so hopefully the cast will be announced at that time, if not before.

re: Spamalot in London?

Well ill be there at the press release!

I cannot say for certain but i do know Tim and Eddie were not approached for the same role - so its possible they could star together.

Thanks for that clarification. Generally I would say whoever plays Arthur would be the one "leading the cast", and I was having trouble picturing Eddie in the role.

Now I'll just hope for even more clarification from the press launch!

re: Spamalot in London?

I haven't had trouble picturing Eddie as Arthur actually - I think he'd be great! I think Roger Allam would make a rather good Arthur too.

re: Spamalot in London?

Can Eddie sing? That's a genuine question...I don't know if he can or not. The role of Arthur requires someone with at least a reasonably good singing voice.
