re: Witches Of Eastwick

I've not seen this particular version so i can't yet comment on its values as a production. But to say it has an "unmemorable score" is ludicrous - there are some quite fantastic songs in the score. And on the other side of the coin, though Chitty's production values may be strong, that score is seriously unmemorable!

re: Witches Of Eastwick

RE: Southampton press, theres only the local Echo, and they love everything! Mayflower does a lot of business with them, that may have something to do with it, plus the reviews are barely that. Although Chitty was due to open there before London as an out of town try out, but they decided it was cheaper just to go straight to London.

I enjoyed Chitty more than Witches as a show, and I would agree Witches score isnt that memorable, apart from one song id forgotten it all by the time id left. But the book is the bigger problem. The three witches were brilliant, but the rest of the cast were miscast I thought

re: Witches Of Eastwick

As always, it comes down to personal taste - and we're all different! When I saw the original West End "Witches" it blew me away. And I play the CD reularly because I find a number of the songs mindblowing. On the other hand, Chitty bored me to tears when I saw it in the West End and I find the score bland and lifeless.

As for this production, it seems from most comments that Marti Pellow may be miscast - but I thought Ian McShane was seriously miscast too. In fact I've never seen a good Darryl in any production I've seen. The original West End witches were all brilliant but, having seen all actresses currently playing the witches in various other musicals, I'm sure they are all brilliant too. And as I said before - I'm really excited about seeing this in Cardiff 5 weeks from tonight!

re: Witches Of Eastwick

I agree with you Bob on Chitty, first time i saw it in London I was bored to. But then i saw it on tour a few times for various reasons and it grew on me. Not brilliant but as an evenings entertainment Chitty just washed over me, with Witchs I just kept spotting plot problems and waiting for it to get great (many people had told me what a great show it is).

Marti is pretty good as the Devil, quite sleazy.

re: Witches Of Eastwick

'Better' is so subjective as to be useless as a descriptor of quality. Different people value different things and I find an overload of pantomime and camp results in a tedious evening - the Manchester reviewer obviously disagrees, so there's nothing to validate any of his opinions in my eyes!

Anyway, the show is my 'Drowsy Chaperone' - I'm fully aware of the flaws (though not plot problems?) but love it anyway! And I can't wait for next Wednesday... re: Witches Of Eastwick
