As someone loosely associated with the show - I can't understate enough that this was terribly handled but in no way a show of racism.  they should have auditioned Oak in the first place.  This was more about saving a financially struggling show (after Oak there were talks of a larger name taking over), and them not being happy with Oak's performance (though no one will publically admit that).  Nothing to do with race.  Everyone else who got involved made it that m

Maybe next time producers shouldn't offer roles without auditioning the actor in the first place.  Oak was offered, not auditioned, and once they saw a combination of what he was doing with the character and the lack of box office appeal they were so hoping for, they did what any good producer would do; try and find a way to keep it open.  That being said, they handled it terribly.  But for folks to call the producers of the most diverse cast on Broadway (for which equ
