wow wow wow. Hope to catch this one last time, maybe even for it's final performance. Wow. All I can say is that I have lost all respect for Oak, and the Kagens...well ever since the Ars Nova controversy....sad.
The Ultra Left/Ultra PC crowd really need to take a look at themselves and look at the destruction they are causing. They have well intentions of course - but need to engage with the truth before further harm is caused. That said, it's possible Mandy could have come in and then the show close quickly after anyway. So perhaps all they did was cut the short lifeline.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
As long as everyone who was offended by replacing a black actor with a white one is ok, that's all that matters. Hopefully no one will ever EVER replace a black actor with a white one ever again because it's the worst thing a producer could ever do.
Who cares if about 100 ppl lost their pension, 401k, health insurance weeks, salary and the joy of performing on Broadway. People's feelings are safe now and that's what really counts.
It genuinely baffles me that people are still managing to blame the Mandy controversy when it's clear now that a fall replacement was never lined up and the show would've closed sooner than later anyway.
