Tallulah Treats
 Aug 14 2013, 12:34:54 PM
After getting such a positive reaction here on the Merman post from my new blog, I am pleased to share my latest, "Tallulah Treats," featuring rare audio and video of Tallulah Bankhead. The most notable things include audio recordings of Ms. Bankhead recreating scenes from THE LITTLE FOXES and PRIVATE LIVES. Plus some of her TV appearances, and the entire ALL ABOUT EVE broadcast with Tallulah as Margo. Check it out here: http://jacksonupperco.com/2013/08/14/tallulah-treats/
An Evening With Ethel Merman (BBC--1965)

I'm 19 and I'm obsessed with Ethel! I suppose it started with my love of Cole Porter, and since Merman was his main muse, my adoration for her grew as well. She worked with so many greats and introduced so many important and unforgettable scores, but there's such truth and honesty in her work. There are no pretenses -- she gets out there and does her thing! She's funny, she's large, she's Broadway. There's nobody else like her.

Thank you so much for sharing my links and making this the most popular week yet on my new blog!

If anyone hasn't yet taken the time to explore the site, or at least the Merman post, here's one of my favorite videos... perhaps the best interview Ms. Merman ever gave... with Gene Shalit in early 1983: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gp0LpaAHSdc

Enjoy!

I posted this video on YouTube. You can read about it and check out other Merman rarities (including live audios from the '30s and '40s) on my new blog.

This is the Merman post: http://jacksonupperco.com/2013/07/10/merman-rarities/

Elaine Stritch : movin over and out
 Apr 6 2013, 05:40:30 PM
I can't recall anything about Bernadette. But she did mention that since she's been photographed with Tom Hanks, everyone thinks she's a star now.

She mentioned Joan Rivers, who went Thursday night. And talked about Lauren Bacall, who called her recently.

She told some familiar stories, but declined to discuss Barbara Cook. She talked of Bela Lugosi, Ruth Donnelly, Ethel Merman, Bacall, Jane Fonda, Sondheim...

No "Ladies Who Lunch." Actually, no songs that she's famous for performing. All newer material for her. She did a little tribute to the new Pope last night.

Saw the show Friday night. I was one of nine to sit at the bar. I was on the far left, next to the door that Stritch enters from. At about 8:40, I heard her unmistakeable growl as she was ordering around her various assistants. She was so close, I could smell her perfume for ten minutes before she came out. At the risk of starting an argument, it is in this member's opinion that any actress who can act the part as written and designed is an improvement over Ms. Foster.

Gaxton and Moore toured with Merman's Broadway replacement, Venuta, in ANYTHING GOES for a few months.

I actually was just listening to all of the Eva's sing this today.

Patti is the best recorded one. From live audios, Ackerman, Perri, and Lacey are also great.

Merman: 'Sam and Delilah' Recording?
 Dec 31 2011, 12:03:04 AM
PalJoey,

That's a shame that the radio broadcast doesn't exist. I'd kill to hear that as well!

If I remember correctly, in the '04 documentary, "Broadway: The American Musical," there was footage of a younger Merman singing "I Got Rhythm." Do you know where this comes from?

Unpopular Opinions

SWEENEY TODD is far from Sondheim's greatest work.

The original production of CHICAGO was infinitely better than the current revival.

YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN has a fun score.

OKLAHOMA is given a bit more credit than it deserves in musical theatre history.

The majority of the modern vocal technique is uniform, dull, and annoying to listen to.
