I mean it would be absolutely impossible for anyone to migrate to another platform.

Martin's first Tony was an honorary one, she won three competitive awards. It’s also worth noting that for as much as we think of Merman as the definition of the Broadway diva, a large majority of her Broadway credits predate the Tony Awards. She originated three

NYT: Why ‘Show Boat’ Is America’s Most Enduring, Unstable Musical Jan 15

EricMontreal22 said: " Edit: that's from the magnificent complete McGlinn recording which has one fault--the lyrics in chorus numbers are often incoherent unless you know them (to be fair, I suspect this was partly true of the original 1927 performances too). You can hear the lyrics a bit better in the only other recording I know of the song, the JAY recording of the complete revised 1946 version https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-M5-fafnA4 "
I'm very very grateful for that recording, but it's seriously flawed by the use of opera singers whose voices are just wrong for the material, even given the connection to operetta the score unquestionably has. The tempi are also frustratingly sedate, no matter how authentic. Pick up the pace!

This is incredibly true, but also incredibly sad. The choice to do “reality=no singing” is just lazy and easy at this point. I wasn’t a huge fan of Emilia Perez, but I was hoping Spider Woman would integrate non-Aurora songs more in that style. Even Fosse wouldn’t have repeated the Cabaret approach again

Absolutely correct. Unfortunately, for as good as the movie is, Rosalind Russel's performance doesn't quite do it for me and her Rose's Turn is disappointing. I can imagine Judy in it, and it could have been a triumph. (It would also have been a much better fit than her aborted attempt at Annie Oakley...)<

I haven't seen this production yet (going in a few weeks), but for me Julie has always been the most compelling character in SHOW BOAT. To me, it would make most sense to focus the show around HER journey and arc in a future revision of the piece.

Curious how many people here have seen all the biggies (Merman, Lansbury, Daly, Peters, LuPone, and now McDonald).

That really is an overall great article, but not only as pointed out does it bizarrely state that "In Dahomey" was set in a "human zoo," but it also implies that the blackface number in the 1936 version, "Gallivantin' Around," had been a part of the stage version, which it wasn't. And, yeah, don't believe there was ever any Rhaposdy in Blue in the orchestrations. In terms of the revamping of "In Dahomey" for this production, i

How to get into Candide? Dec 30

Definitely start with the Original Broadway Cast recording. Barbara Cook's "Glitter and Be Gay" is, in a word, definitive. And the whole album is just perfect. Brisk, funny, well-sung and a lovely full sound from the orchestra. Goddard Lieberson did Bernstien proud on this one. If you get the CD (says this older gentleman who loves physical media), there will be a snyopsis. Wikipedia also has synopses for the work's various incarnations. I'd avoid the Deutche Grammo

Obviously, it's more Gypsy than Rose driven and shows what an amazing life she led because of and in spite of her mother.
What was even more fascinating was how Gypsy worked with Fanny Brice in a small walk-o

People are talking like this could derail the show, but is that really possible? The reviews were almost all raves, and I don't remember a single outright pan. I imagine there will be grumbling and bad word of mouth for a short time from people whose holiday plans were ruined, maybe box office softens for a bit because people are hesitant to take a chance. But once the cast is back on regularly, I'd imagine the desire to see this show will outweigh the bad patch it is currently g

It's right there in the word."
Actually yes.And it is hardly silly. Racism is about power. It's the reason white people cannot correctly say that black people are racist against whites.."
It's a good excuse for your own racism to play the "I can't be racist because I'm not white card."
As per Merriam Webster " a belief that race is a fundamental determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race"
