What does an embargo have to do with reviews?"
A press embargo is a request or requirement that information or news not be published until a certain date or conditions are met. It is often used in journalism and public relations for press releases, which are official statements or announcements that aim to generate media coverage.
That trailer was amazing I wish I felt like that seeing the actual show though :’(.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
I apologize for any confusion, or if there is a more accepted term when it comes to Broadway. I do tend of think of it more when it comes to movie reviews, where a review embargo tends to be a widely known concept. The fact that theater reviewers don't drop their reviews whenever they want before opening, but at a time on opening night dictated by the production, would seem to indicate the same concept is at work, so it's the term that came to mind.

It's the proper term. Press embargos are used for a variety of stories and press releases.

I know, I don't know what people want. It's Gypsy, not La Cage aux Folles. It shouldn't be super glitzy, and it looks like Gypsy should - tawdry and run-down but in a deliberate way. I think expectations for this one were so sky-high that people have let anything they don't like run away with their expectations
I think most of the costumes look ugly or at best not-period, the worst offender being these bodysuits. This looks like rejected costumes from Death Becomes Her. And don't get me started on the wigs/hair.

Thanks. Just seems to be a strange word for them to choose.
I loved this production. I thought Audra was a phenomenal Rose. I also quite liked the set design - it didn't look cheap to me at all. Maybe it helps that I have never seen Gypsy done professionally before, so I had nothing to really compare it to besides a local dinner theatre production I saw as a kid...
"There’s nothing quite like the power and the passion of Broadway music. "
"Unfortunately, the production makes a rare misstep in its final 15 minutes, rushing through Louise’s transformation from awkward wallflower to confident, celebrity burlesque star Gypsy Rose Lee. Woods at times seems adrift in Brown’s overly busy choreography, and she struggles to match McDonald’s intensity in Louise’s penultimate confrontation with her mother. It’s a scene that should puncture, but barely leaves a bruise.
But it's a small stumble in an otherwise top-to-bottom perfect production, which reminds us that there is truly nothing that McDonald can't do."
I really hope some reviewers speak the truth about what a badly designed, lazy and uninspired production this is. And with a leading lady who can’t sing the score.
As for the 11 o’clock number you’ve all been waiting for: McDonald’s “Rose’s Turn” feels like a once-in-a-lifetime event; the sort of unequivocal theater magic that you one day tell your grandkids about.
😂😂😂😂😂
Even the most fervent scream queens on this board weren’t as fervent as this. Honey needs to dial it back a bit.

Having seen it twice, this is exactly how I feel actually...
